Dr. Roberto Pineda

Dr. Pineda is a kind, sympathetic and knowledgeable specialist. Dr. Pineda is always thinking, computing and calculating during my visits. I know he is figuring the BEST way to proceed. I was blinded from a ptsosis surgery by Frank Sutula who sent me to MEEI.Dr Pineda constantly offers new procedures that will help my vision. I am grateful that I am able to see him knowing how busy he is.Dr. Pineds and his team are exceptional in every way!

I have been a patient of Dr. Pineda for many years now, as first we tracked the progress of the corneal dystrophy in both eyes and then, ultimately, he performed DMEK surgery on both eyes, along with cataract removal. The surgeries went very well and he has been diligently following my progress. I have also sent a colleague to Dr. P, with serious cornea problems that could not be fully resolved but which resulted in major improvement. From other opthamologists, including a couple of his past fellows I have met professionally, I know he is held in high regard. Unfortunately, the demand for his services is high and one could be irritated by the challenges of scheduling appointments and by the length of appointments, which often involved considerable waiting for Dr. P to finish with other patients. It is worth enduring those challenges and the lack of direct e-mail or phone call-back from him to get the benefit of his skills and experience. He is very caring and of incredible… expertise. His caring extends to donating his services internationally to underserved communities where he can save sight and train local physicians as well.

Went to Dr. Pineda to have a DALK corneal procedure versus the standard corneal transplant. On day of procedure, I did not see him before or after procedure. They were not able to perform the DALK (I knew this was a possibility). A young tired woman doctor comes in after the surgery (a resident/fellow I would imagine) and starts going through after care. I have to ask her about the DALK - and then she tells me they were not able to perform so I received the standard transplant. I see Dr. Pineda the following morning. He wants me to come back in a week. Since I live a couple hours away, I suggest I see my eye doc in western mass as he performed my first corneal transplant on my other eye (a surgery that went super well - cornea still holding strong after 15 years). He insists I come back to him. My husband takes day off from work and a week later we go back. He is no where to be found - now a young man doctor assumes his role. No healing has taken place - this young man doctor… decides to place a clear corneal lens/bandage on the eye and wants me back in 2 weeks. Another week passes - I know things are not right. I call my local eye doctor/surgeon. He clearly did not like that the eye was covered with a lens and is more alarmed when he removed it. I could hardly see and the eye was very uncomfortable. My doctor essentially saves the transplant by applying an amniotic patch (uncomfortable procedure I must say) and has me come back a few days later - then a few days after that and so on. Some time passes, vision improves somewhat. But because of the manner in which Dr. Pineda or whomever stitched in the cornea, the stitch line is raised and irritates my eye when my eyelid rubs over it. So my doctor suggests a contact lens to smooth this interface and also improve my vision. This worked well. Over the year or two following surgery, stitches repeatedly popped - causing irritation and of course the need to have the offending stitch removed when this happened (also an unpleasant procedure). The eye is stable now - however, the first eye I had done 15 years ago had a much better result and I largely attribute this to the great care and surgical ability of my local doctor. And conversely, I attribute the less than ideal outcome in my right eye to the very poor skill and attentiveness of Dr. Pineda and his subordinates - I believe that I was an unimportant patient to him, not worthy of his time, attention or concern. However, I am sure my insurance and my co-pays rewarded him well for his poor performance.

Dr. Pineda and his staff are professional, knowledgeable, and absolutely outstanding at what they do. My cataract surgery was a high risk, complex case. Dr. Pineda did a miraculous job. The surgery surgery went smoothly and the results have have dramatically enhanced my quality of life.

I had refractive surgery by him a few years ago and need an adjustment. I have been trying to get a returned phone call for two months with no response.

Always polite, checked-in with me - excellent patient-doctor communication style. Always teaching younger students but asks if its ok for them to review my symptoms. Accurate diagnostic.

I had a very bad outcome from a surgery. Dr. Pineda recommended an additional surgery which made me worse. It literally did the exact opposite of what he said it would. The worst part is the way acted after he did it. He was so awful to me and did not even acknowledge that he made me worse. Not a very good surgeon and not a nice person at all.

Dr. Pineda is by far one of the best Eye surgeons I have met. I am 34 years old and had cataracts in both my eyes for a very long time Different doctors over the years told me just to "wait" to have them removed . When I met with Dr. Pineda he was very professional and made me feel confident that cataract surgery was an option and that he would be willing to help me. He explains all the details of what the surgery entailed. He explained the high risks involved in my particular situation . He perform cataract surgery on both my eyes I am happy to say that both procedures went very well! Life looks so much better now. Seeing through a clear lens versus a cloudy lens makes a world of difference Thank you to Dr Pineda for being a great surgeon! I highly recommend him

Dr. Pineda is not only a extremely competent he is also an unusual person. He donates many weeks a year traveling to impoverished countries restoring the eye site of those you have been forgotten. Often times he returns to the Mass Eye and Ear with Doctors from these countries where he takes on a teaching role so that they can return to their homelands and continue his work. I also have learned that the doctors spends much of his time repairing the work of those doctors that are less capable. I went to Dr. Pinada after a misdiagnosed cataract condition, upon the recommendation of a friend of mine. Dr. Pinada operated on one eye and I cannot believe how much better I can see. It was like I was looking at the world through slightly dirty sunglasses and now my vision is corrected to 20 to 20 and filled with light, color and clarity. The surgery was also quick and painless. I have scheduled my second eye in 4 weeks. Mass Eye and ear is probably the number one ophthalmic facility… in the world so expect to wait if you go there. But you are going to one of the best facilities and seeing a world class doctor. In my opinion it is worth the wait. Dr. Pinada also has a very good bedside manner and is very thorough. I was examined by the doctor and several of his residents. I think I had four exams during my first visit.
