Ajit Jayant Deshmukh, MD

After years of suffering with arthritis in both knees, I finally had my left knee replaced in May 2025 followed by my right knee a year later. But before doing anything, I did my research. I wanted an expert surgeon who would view me as a whole person not just a damaged joint. I found that Dr. Ajit Deshmukh is not only highly skilled and respected, but is also personable, empathetic, and responsive. Unlike other surgeons I met, Dr. Deshmukh showed genuine interest in my situation, spent the time to listen to and answer my questions, and explained what I could expect before, during and after surgery so there were no surprises. More than a year since my first surgery, my left knee works like a dream. And 10 weeks after having my right knee done, I am well on my way to regaining my quality of life. So, if surgery looks like it could be in your future, go see Dr. Deshmukh. As for me, I will think of him with gratitude whenever I walk up and down the stairs pain free.

Dr. Ajit Deshmukh is an outstanding doctor and human being. He recently replaced my right hip and the entire process was flawless. After three months I am completely back to my normal life. He and his team were attentive at every step of the way, communicating speedily with me whenever I had a question or request. What meant the most to me was his kind personal regard for me, from the thorough explanation of every phase at our first meeting to phone check-ins and in-hospital visits to reassure me before and after the operation. In today’s medical world, he is one in a million.

Dr. Deshmukh did a total knee replacement for me on Sept. 7, 2022. The next day i was out of the hospital. Within 2 weeks i was walking unassisted. I’m 76 yrs. old. Dr. Deshmukh performed a partial knee replacement on my left knee 2 months ago, I am very pleased with the surgery. I no longer limp and walk normally thanks to him, he is very pleasant and knowledgeable, he will answer all your questions and will not rush you. I very highly recommend him.

Where do I begin? I had two visits with Dr. Deshmukh and it was two too many. My purpose in seeing him was to help to give me shots to relieve the pain in my knees, but that is not what happened. At first visit, I asked for Cortisone shots, but was denied on one of my knees however, I needed shots in both of knees. I also was inquiring about the Syn-visc gel shots because I had those shots back in 2017 by a wonderful. compassionate Ortho. I decided that I would try them again. The gel shots were helpful in relieving my pain back then, where I did not have anymore pain until recently. Dr. Desmukh proceeded in telling me that the shots that he wanted to administer are in one setting because the 2017 shots that I had were given in intervals of 2weeks apart and well they should have been because your body accepts the shots better over the 2 shots rule. But Dr. Deshmukh insisted that the Syn-visc-One shots, where you get just the one shot in your knees would be equivalent to the other… gel shots I received in 2017. To my amazement and pain and suffering, it was NOT. The Syn-visc-One-shot rendered me cripple. I could not stand up on my own, I could not walk at all. So I tried icing my knees and went on bed rest for 5 days, however, I am not a bed-rest girl. I am a very active life person and couldn't understand what was happening to me. This all transpired over the Christmas, New Year holidays which meant that my chances of getting a call from Dr. Deshmukh were slim to none. I had no choice but to contact the NYU Langone group to reach out to him and explain it is a dire emergency! I called the Urgent Care at NYU Langone and spoke briefly with a Dr. there who informed me that they reached out to Dr. Deshmukh and his message to me was to get to an emergency ortho clinic and try to get some help from them. I was flawed, I could not believe that he was taking no accountability for administering me this deadly poisonous shot. Later, I looked up the Syn-visc-One shot and found myriads of people who had exactly the same symptoms as mine, in fact, I found out that the shots were recalled in 2018 for salmonella in 36 states. Many of the people are trying to sue the company that manufactures these deadly gel shots. However, it was a day late and a dollar short, when I found out this information. After coaxing and pleading with the Dr. in the urgent care to give me high level pain killers by making her understand that at my age and stature, it would not be wise for me to sit in and Urgent Ortho facility as this time, while covid cases are so high. Had it not been for that, I would probably have to have had emergency surgery for which I probably would not have made it out alive. On the Monday after New Years, I tried to page Dr. Deshmukh again at which time he did get back to me. What he said to me at that time, was horrific. He blamed me for wanting the shot and tried to assure me that the shot was exactly the same shot I had in 2017. But I said " NO"! This shot is too agressive and also told him that the shot was recalled in 2018. He didn't even blink at any of the information that I was giving him. Instead, he kept telling me what he wasn't going to help me with, which was everything. I knew that I had been hoodwinked by NYU Langone and Dr. Deshmukh in making my insurance pay for these lethal injections. I could not believe his blatant disregard my very deadly situation. He then told me perhaps I should seek help elsewhere, which I was happy to do. By my surprise I had an appointment at another Ortho on that following Tuesday, where they saved my life with Cortisone shots in both knees. I was given a small portion of my mobility back. I am continuing to see them and are going to get knee braces to wear around the house to help get my mobility back. I hope I am on the road to recovery, but I must say to anyone reading this, NEVER go to this Dr., never get this shot and never go to NYU Langone on 52nd street. They are a money-hungry sham of a clinic. They will leave you for dead!

I was terrified at the prospect of having a knee revision but after meeting Dr. Deshmukh, I don’t feel so apprehensive. As everyone mentioned, Dr. Deshmukh has excellent bedside manners. This is especially important, because it sets the tone of patient and doctors relationships. It builds the trust between two parties. He’s gentle manners made me feel like he’s empathetic to many of us who are suffering in pain. Thanks Dr. Deshmukh you are truly the best!

Dr. Deshmukh has a caring and gentle approach. He listens well. In addition to having a wonder bedside manner his assurances that we would take the necessary steps to diagnose my condition and take appropriate action gave me peace of mind. I am recommending Dr. Deshmukh to friends who have knee and hip pain.

I went to the doctor because of my knee replacement done a few years ago by another surgeon was very painful. He impressed me with his bedside manner and clarity of thought and I had my revision knee replacement done by Dr. Deshmukh at NYU. The surgery went successfully and I bounced back in no time. I can’t stop praising him. He is the best.

Best orthopedic doctor in NY (and I would know since I have had a few) he is kind, accommodating, thorough and most importantly, sympathetic. He answers your calls, emails and is just there for you. It is so rare to find this and am forever grateful for getting to have him as my doctor (even if it meant getting a hip replacement.)
