Dr. Alan R Cohen, MD

Dr. Cohen single handedly saved our daughters life! He was the most knowledgeable, compassionate, kind human being. From the moment he walked into our lives, he treated our daughter like she was his only and most special patient. He allowed her to assist with decision making and gave her the little bits of control she was able to have during a time that everything was out of control. We love Dr. Cohen and are forever indebted to he and his team! He will forever be a part of our family for holding us close during this horrific time in our lives.

Frustrated with my regular walking gait having changed to a shuffle combined w/ memory issues, I eventually was sent for an MRI that revealed I had a colloid cyst at the base of my brain. I was advised to go directly to Johns Hopkins Hospital. The term "providence" comes to mind. Johns Hopkins Hospital has been in my backyard all my life and I just didn't realize the world-renowned talent they have there until this incident. Dr. Alan Cohen was assigned to me and was very personable. He didn't mind my repeated questions and showed empathy/compassion as well as excitement when I remembered the little stuff. What made me fall in love w/ him was when he called me on my mobile phone from another spot in the hospital pre-surgery to check in on me, a chitty-chat. I just had a 6 week post-surgery meeting with him and he continued to knock my socks off. He said: "You do know that I'm a pediatric surgeon, don't you?". I responded: "Yes. It's a good thing becaue I'm a big baby!"

Totally agree with all comments. Dr. Cohen is such a great doctor with exceptional expertise and cutting edge technology. He was full of energy and meticulous, answering thousands of questions and explaining in detail, which greatly eased our anxiety. After 10+ hours of surgery starting at 5:30 a.m., he still came to see the patient at night. The results of the surgery were excellent and our son was discharged on the fourth morning. My limited words cannot express all my gratitude to Dr. Cohen and his great team.

Dr.Cohen is the best doctor one can wish to have to deal with life threatening medical situation. He is really unique and one of its kind as he is not only brilliant neurosurgeon with enormous knowledge, vast experience and perfect surgical skills,but most and foremost he has an outstanding and compassionate personality who genuinely cares for his patients and devotes them all of his time his patients are such a priority for him that every day early morning when people are only waking up and certainly way before any of his colleagues he is already in the hospital and personally goes around and individually checks on every one of his patients he even before he gets off work he be there to check on them his care extends way beyond surgery itself as his main imperative is in seeing his patients restoring their life long well being more than anything else. Thank God for sending Dr.Cohen to help my granddaughter kristalia who has a large tumor in a complicated location but Dr. Cohen remove… all of it thank you so much Dr. Cohen!

We owe absolutely everything to Dr. Cohen and his team at Johns Hopkins. This past Winter, our 7 moth old son fell while in the care of another and suffered a fractured skull that resulted in an epidural hematoma. We were extremely lucky that we were able to get our son into the care of Dr. Cohen, for he was very close to succumbing from his injuries. Our lives were shattered that day, but Dr. Cohen was able to save our little man's life from such a tragic event. He checked in on us every single day while we were at Hopkins, and always had time to answer our questions. He is an amazing person, and while our lives changed forever on that day – Dr. Cohen and his team gave us our son back, and we will be forever grateful for their incredible hard work and dedication. Thank you, Dr. Cohen.

The best pediatric Neurosurgery Treated my daughter with the best concerns and care

Finding the very best surgeon in the world when your child needs brain tumor surgery is challenging, but I believe after exhaustive research, I found him with Dr. Alan Cohen and the entire team at Johns Hopkins. Every decision made is a team effort made up of the top physicians in the world, pioneers in their field, some world-renowned, all experienced brain tumor experts. I appreciated input from a team of experts, sharing specialized knowledge from their respective disciplines. And I appreciated that Dr. Alan Cohen was at the helm. What was most impressive was the down-to-earth qualities and unpretentious personalities of each and every physician on our team. Dr. Cohen is one of (if not THE) top pediatric neurosurgeons in the world. To find this quality paired with a friendly, sweet, truly caring personality is as rare as my son's tumor! Dr. Cohen, You save a life today. And it was my son's. Forever Indebted

Dr. Cohen truly cares about his patients, and it shows. He fixed my daughter's craniosynostosis and really worked with his colleagues to find the best surgical option for her specific case. No one-size-fits-all for him! Never seems rushed, always patient with the millions of questions that I had.

After our daughter was referred to Hopkins for a difficult mass found on the optic nerves near her brain, Dr. Cohen was the one who took the lead on the matter, at least in terms with interfacing with us. After it was determined a biopsy was warranted, he also led the surgical team. He reached out to us numerous times in the lead up and was a reassuring, though pragmatic, presence the day of the surgery. After the successful operation, he continued to regularly check in on her (and us). I don't know if these were his regular hours or not but he'd reach out to us as early as 6:30am and as late as 8:30pm, visiting numerous times while she recuperated at the hospital. I know the review is for Dr. Cohen but I also have to give a shout out to his admin, Kim. She also played a huge role for us, helping with the logistics, getting us in with other specialists ASAP to move the matter along as fast as possible. Overall, while it was a very unfortunate scenario to be in, Dr. Cohen was great.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Day: 3 Doctors are some of the most incredible people. I’ve had many wonderful ones throughout the years, but the greatest doctor in the world is my childhood brain surgeon Alan R. Cohen or “Big Al” I can’t even put into words how wonderful of a human being he is. Big Al saved my life when I was nine years old. He removed a portion of my brain tumor & created a drain in my head so that I would not require a shunt. Beyond that, Big Al made every trip I took to the hospital an adventure. Every week required a visit down to his office. My oncologist & neurologist would have to let me leave appointments early so that I could practice our performances for “Elvis’s Birthday!” I remember going on television & radio with Big Al, especially when we were on “Good Morning America!” He visited me in the hospital when I was in for other things & would have me dance & sing his original song, “ Extreme Neuroanatomy” which I can still sing every word to this day! I… will never be able to describe to people how thankful I am to call Big Al my neurosurgeon. On top of being the top neurosurgeon in the country he’s just an amazing person & an incredible dancer!!!!He cares about every single one of his patients. Even this year when I was really scared about my scans, he took time out of his busy OR & performance schedule to look over my scans. He’s been there for me through everything & made my experience as a childhood cancer patient just more fun than difficult. He also introduced to the king, Elvis; who’s music I did & still turn to in hard times. So for this Childhood Cancer Awareness Month I was to give a huge shoutout to my hero Big Al/Notorious ARC!!!! I love you so much!
