Dr. Mark Gregory Luciano, MD

I waited 4 hours to see this doctor. When he finally entered the room, he was rushed and egotistical. He spent about 4 minutes with me only to bad mouth my previous drs. and suggest ICP monitoring. We deserve better.

I am 76 add was having balance and gait issues. Couldn’t get a diagnosis at home. I suspected NPH so I went to Hopkins and saw Dr Luciano. After three months of extensive testing they confirmed NPH and we went with a VP shunt. The only times I saw Dr Luciano was five minutes on my initial visit and two minutes just before going into surgery. I never saw him again. Residents only. The shunt is doing well, but his lack of follow up by him or his PA since leaving the hospital the next day is unbelievable. Nevery got a call to see how I was doing. I found a great NS at Duke who I follow up with. One hour away from home. I had Hopkins send him my scans and records. I’d choose Duke if I had to do it again.

Doctor Luciano is by far the one of the best Neurological Surgeon that I have had during the years I was a little sad when I moved down to Florida knowing that I won't be able to see him again as I was transported from Youngstown hospital to Cleveland Clinic after my regular surgeon was starting to get older and I kept getting my shut plugged but he wasn't on call on that day so I ended up with a different doctor but again my shut plugged up so than I got Luciano which listen to my whole medical history than did a couple of shut revisions with one being where he can adjust it as needed than those kept plugging up so than as a last resort he tried the Endoscopic third ventriculostomy Surgery which has bee a success for almost 20 years now so although I have a headache everyday due to my 80+ surgery on my head I still have a life now thanks to Luciano. I sure miss a great doctor down here in Florida as I thank him so very much for taking his time with me and figuring me out.… Thanks to One Great Doctor, Larry

I have had pseudo tumor cerebri for many yrs and it went misdiagnosed for all that time... When my neurosurgeon finally figured it out in Ny where I used to live it was real bad and blinded me in my left eye.... He placed a lumbar shunt which kept breaking over and over a total of 17 back surgeries that included the front as well and Oh yeah and a slight snip of my spinal cord which has crippled me..... I researched for a surgeon and found Luciano so we found a house and moved to Cleveland... Dr Luciano was appalled with what they did to me and said he would never operate on me more then 2 times..... Well after 8 brain surgeries A STAFF INFECTION THAT BECAME SEPTIC AND SPINAL TAPS THAT HAVE DAMAGED NERVES FOR LIFE I AM STILL SUFFERING AND WHEN I CALLED AFTER THE LAST SURGERY TO MAKE AN APPT THEY SAID HE NO LONGER WORKS THERE NOR DOES HIS TEAM... NO LETTER, SMOKE SIGNAL, CARRIER PIGEON OR PHONE CALL.... HE'S GONE THAT'S WHAT I GOT AND I NEED THIS SHUNT ADJUSTED AND CANNOT FIND A DR… SMH.....THAT IS NOT HOW YOU TREAT PATIENTS AND I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A WAY TO START UP A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT BECAUSE I KNOW IN MY CASE THERE IS A LOT THAT WAS SWEPT UNDER THE RUG AND I AM STILL SUFFERING......

Dr. Luciano was my neurosurgeon from the time I was 12 years old until I was 30. He is a very kind talented surgeon. And I was blessed to be in his care! He performed 5 of the 7 craniotomys I have had with great success and full recovery!

Doc was able to correct my problem and i have been feeling great since 2010

No words to describe my disappoint

This review is being written basically for two reasons. 1. Because Dr Luciano will be seriously missed in Cleveland. 2. As I strongly believe he has been misrepresented in some of these reviews on the site. At the age of 54 I have underwent 65 separate surgeries over the years. All due to various birth defects. Dr Xiao Di and then Dr Mark Luciano have helped us to get answers to a lifetime of misunderstanding by other medical professionals. Now they are imperfect me just as the rest of the Drs are so they no doubt make mistakes as you and I do. However, of all the numerous Doctors I've seen over the years I find Dr Mark Luciano to not only be one of the most understanding and skilled Doctors I've ever seen. But also found him to have superb bedside manners. Post op of my last surgery in 2012 he openly admitted that he had underestimated the amount of compression in the CSF before the surgery. This did mean a few months of additional suffering on my part. I hold no ill will… there though as it's apparent that none of my other doctors seen it either. It's since been explained by another doctor that with four separate issues going on, all of which causing spikes in csf pressures that it would have been impossible for Dr Luciano to see what was going on before he cut into the dura. Bottom line, I've enjoyed a little over 2 years of relief because he did listen even though he didn't agree or necessarily understand the cause of the symptoms at first. No other Doctor we seen did listen rather they blew us off. Another thing that gave me confidence in Dr Luciano was that he seen no rush in going to brain surgery. Rather he was very cautious before offering the option of surgery to attempt a fix. At our last meeting he suggested we may want to consider some sort of valve drain such as others have mentioned here. I refused only to find that now 2.5 years down the road it most likely is needed. But he didn't try to force this in anyway. Just explained why he thought it may be a wise choice and left it up to me. Every Doctor is going to get bad and good reviews. I understand that... They are human and will make mistakes just as they will have triumphs. But Dr Mark Luciano has never shown me anything but a compassionate and competent heart. And Mark, if you are reading this, thank you very much.

Dr. Luciano is very capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy. We had an extreme mal-function of my son's brain shunt. He was experiencing a seizure that would not stop. Dr. Luciano treated him, removed the old shunt and replaced it. He also made sure that all other physical brain problems were addressed and remedied. I have utmost confidence in Dr. Luciano's treatment and abilities. Four years later, we continue to be problem free!!! We will dearly miss the Doctor at the Cleveland Clinic.

He is a wonderful doctor and I would trust him with any surgery. His bedside manner is exceptional and I will follow him to any hospital. I am going to follow him to Johns Hopkins.
