Dr Amit Kulkarni, MD

Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology Amit Kulkarni, M.D., is a thoracic cancers specialist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix, where he specializes in providing leading-edge, innovative care for patients with lung cancer and other cancer types affecting the thorax.Dr. Kulkarni’s philosophy is founded on educating and informing his patients, understanding their unique diagnosis and health goals and developing a targeted treatment plan with the help of innovative approaches to care, such as precision oncology. A dedicated researcher, he also works closely on clinical trials focused on developing new immunotherapies and targeted therapies for cancer, with the goal of providing patients with access to more treatment options.A member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the European Society of Medical Oncology and the International Association for Study in Lung Cancer, Dr. Kulkarni is board-certified in internal medicine and hematology-oncology. Dr. Kulkarni completed a residency in internal medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.Dr. Kulkarni has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and is an editor or reviewer for more than a dozen journals. He has led the development of two investigator-initiated trials testing whether manipulating the gut microbiome by fecal microbiota transplant may improve immunotherapy outcomes for people with lung cancer. He also has research interests in developing biomarkers for treatment response and studying the relationship between gut microbiome and immunotherapy treatment outcomes.
