Dr. Angelo James Mattalino, MD

I was a lifetime athlete that went to University with a full scholarship. I had an ACL tear and thought that the doctor with 25 years of experience would be a great choice. He had performed an ACL repair on me. Yes, a repair, which is not a a golden standard or acceptable approach for athletes such as myself (I found that out later on). I was 27 years old and he has also told me that he would not be able to use my hamstring for a tissue, as my body has been worn out and is not in a good condition for that. (Which was not true either). After the ACL repair that he has performed, I had the same pain that I did prior to surgery, plus my mechanics of the knee were all messed up, my knee cannot turn to the side and it just gets stuck. He would tell me that the pain is normal, and continue to send me to different PTs - as they were not helping, refusing to send me to do another MRI, as apparently the MRI would not show the difference because of the surgery. I continued to do the PT with a… sharp constant pain for 18 months. There was no progress, and all he kept telling me is that everything was fine with the surgery. After 18 months of misery, I went to the other sports primary doctor by myself, who just by performing physical tests could tell that my ACL was still completely torn, and was never fixed with the surgery that Mattalino did! I did an MRI and it showed that it was completely torn off like it was before. I also ended with ruining my other leg, as it was overcompensating for 2 years of pain and PT. After that I had a proper ACL reconstruction at Mayo Clinic, and the pain was gone. They used my hamstring graft, which was in a perfect shape! Even though I have no pain anymore after the new surgery, the damage of my knee getting stuck and unable to move to the side is permanent. In addition, I am still having issues with my other leg that over compensated and there is no help for that either. All this affects my daily life, and will can never be back to playing sports like used to. I wish I have never gone to Dr. Mattalino and trusted him that I was in good hands, and that he had the expertise and professionalism as stated on his website. He simply did not care! PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE if you don't want to end up damaged even more!! I really hope this review will help someone, which is the reason I wrote it.

I injured my left knee as a result of a workman’s comp incident. Dr Mattalino came highly recommended. Called his office at 9am on Feb 19, 2019 and spoke to Mary, who said she’d talk to the Dr and call me back in 30 min’s. At 1pm, my workman’s comp rep called the Dr’s office to check status. Mary told them Banner Hospital was reluctant to release medical records, however she would definetly call me by the end of the day. I called Banner only to find out Dr Mattalino’s office had not requested any records. Any to add insult to injury (NPI), I never received a call from Dr Mattalino’s office. I’m sure Dr Mattalino is a fine surgeon...If you can get ‘anyone’ from his office to return a call.

Unfortunately, my experience with this doctor sucked - mostly due to his office staff I would imagine. I was referred to him by my non-surgeon ortho. Went in for the exam, thought 'this is a great doctor' ... and then NOTHING. He was going to confer with my other doctor and get back to me. Six weeks, three phone calls from me and two from my other doctor - NOTHING. There has been ZERO communication regarding my need for surgery or some other form of treatment. Moving on to another doctor today.

Dr. Mattalino has been my doctor for issues related to sports injuries since approximately 2000. Thanks to Dr. Mattalino I was able to compete in Arizona IM with an 11:20:20 performance at the age of 51. Dr. Mattalino performed surgery on both knees (prior to multiple triathlons including IronMan race) right shoulder, PRP technique on left elbow and utilized inflammation therapy on the right elbow. He has referred me multiple times to other doctors when my ailments such as hip issues were not his specialty. Doc Mattalino and his excellent support team have kept me in the race - thanks Doc!

Awesome surgeon with a great bedside manner! Will recommend to anyone in need of an orthopedic surgeon.
