Dr. David Alan Mcdonough, MD

As a person living in recovery as well as being HIV+, I have found Dr. McDonough to be very on point with my care. He is very thorough and because of this found a kidney issue that got remedied before it became a serious issue. If you are looking for a medical doctor who will go the extra steps for you in your health and care this man is for you. I have no doubt that is past life journey experience as only made him be and do better.

I think it's very suspicious that one person wrote 3 5-star reviews, all the same to try to bring this doctor's rating up. As a former patient of David McDonough, I am more in the 1 to 0 star camp. My care under this doctor was definitely 5-star at first but it quickly deteriorated in the years after that. Yes, doctors are human and have demons like everyone else blah blah blah. But they have something called a license and that license has NOTHING to do with their demons. The license holds them to a higher standard than the rest of us. That license requires them to keep their demons from having an impact on the degree and quality of care they provide. Period. Let the doctor gain a few years of drug-free living to regain the confidence of the public. Until then, he would definitely not be my first choice. Or my second. Or my third.

I have read some of the negative reviews here and certainly, we all have our own demons to deal with, Dr. McDonough included. I have been a patient of his for several years and in my experience, he is nothing short of exemplary. Every visit he spends a great deal of time with me but more importantly, he listens to what I have to say. A rarity these days with doctors in Los Angeles it seems. His medical knowledge and desire to look at a situation from every angle is impressive. My health since seeing Dr. McDonough has improved dramatically. I highly recommend him and if I could give him 10 stars instead of 5 I would. As far as the negative reviews, its sad to see people not recognize that in fact, a doctor is human. At least with Dr. McDonough, he is going thru great efforts to make amends for his past personal mistakes something we all should find commendable.

I left the care of this doctor many years ago when he and his then-colleague Dr. Reddy told me that I would not live to the age of 50 and needed to be on a drug called Fuzeon which cost $25,000 a year. They referred me to an insurance broker to purchase additional insurance to cover the cost. The insurance broker quoted $1,000/month for a policy (pre-Obama Care) to supplement my employer's plan. I didn't sleep for a week and went to an estate planning lawyer who helped me get my affairs in order. Then I got a second opinion - and I am glad I did. I was told that Dr. McDonough would be paid thousands of dollars to enroll me in a clinical study for that drug and that my current regimen - which he prescribed - was too toxic. I was given a short drug holiday by my new doc, and reintroduced to a less toxic regimen that I am still on and tolerating quite well. I am now over 50, happily married, and planning to have my first child. My point is this: I can't be sure this doctor… was using meth when I was in his care and if he wasn't, this little bit of history should give you extra pause. I trusted this doctor with my life and he is the reason I will never trust another doctor for the rest of the life I have left (and since McDonough I have only chosen the best of the best of the best). All these positive reviews are from loyal but misguided enablers. The doctor's license needed to be suspended - or revoked - years ago His current probation for meth use was a long time coming and caps years of questionable judgment and practices - just read the reviews. David, I hope you now have the capacity for brutal self-honesty and deep, deep introspection into your life and especially your role and behavior as a caregiver to people inflicted with a deadly virus. I hope you move forward in sobriety with humility and the capacity to love and respect yourself and others. Your patients aren't instruments through which you self-medicate or feed personal demons you can't keep in check. Shame is not my intention here; I pray you come to know yourself so that you can heal yourself. Get busy with it, and G-d bless you.

Go on the CA Medical Board website and type in McDonough’s name. His license was suspended for using meth!

Lots of changes in offices and partners but one thing that is constant, Dr Mc Donough is an excellent doctor.

I can't believe that a practice could go downhill to this extent. The doctor was excellent at one time, but something has happened. Employees leave, the practice has been at several addresses within the last 15 months, and I hardly saw any other patients in the office (for Dr. McDonough). I had to wait in the waiting room until almost all of the employees were gone for the day before I saw the doctor. I called about follow up care and received no call back. This is scary. I tried to remain loyal to the practice, but I'm done.

I've tried to remain loyal because he's clearly very smart. But his staff tells me he's routinely hours late for work (without even checking in with his office), with absolutely no follow-up after visits. Recently he was locked out of his new office by the landlord. My final appointment was at his apartment! Very sad to see such talent go to waste. Whatever his issues, I hope he has hit bottom and I wish him well.
