Dr. Thomas Honming Yau, MD

Dr. Yau failed to check the basics when I went in complaining or watery eyes in 2008, and didn't give me a correct diagnosis as late as 2021 when I went to another doctor, who diagnosed the problem and fixed it in 3 weeks, including minor surgery. Further, Dr. Yau often mis-prescribed my glasses.

Really great physician with a calm and caring manner. He is an excellent surgeon!!

Dr. Yau is outstanding in every way. He is precise in his work, and yet kind and patient. He is calm and steady. He takes time to explain various options and to answer your questions. My experience with him both in the office and in surgery was outstanding. I highly recommend him for anyone needing cataract surgery.

Dr. Yau is simply one of the best doctors out there. Caring, composed, and compassionate. His staff, over the years, have gotten worst. 80% have very thick accent that you don't understand half of what they are saying to you. Most of the time, they are rude, and treat the patients like they know nothing and it will take several times for them to get any billing right (because once again you question whether they understand english at all). For a practice that charges patients and their insurance companies an arm and a leg, I expect better service from the practice. But Dr. Yau is so nice that I have a hard time telling him just fire your staff, they really suck.

All my ratings are for post surgery of my left eye. Since I have had my right eye done (cataract) 2 days ago , I now know how a caring and kind doctor and his team treat patients; not the way I was treated in Dr. Yau's office ... After surgery, I was taken in a wheel chair to my son's car because I was still not awake due to medication that was given me because they insisted I had to have the needle put in my hand. I told them that I could not tolerate the continuous stabbing and blood. I told them they had to use a very small needle (pediatric). The response I got was "Ms. Tevelow we do this all the time, we know what to do" They gave me 2 small cups of medication that put me out immediately. I don't know what happened during surgery since I did not wake up until 5:00 P.M. at my home. I learned thru my recent experience that in cases such as mine, there is nothing wrong with putting the needle in my arm where I have no trouble. I have never had surgery where a doctor allows you to… go home without waking up beforehand. From day 1, I had problems. I felt a continuous scratching in my eye and after several phone calls and visits including 2 doctors I did not know but were "experts" who were recommended by 1 of the doctors (all doctors told me nothing wrong). I finally insisted that I was not leaving the office until someone could tell me what the pain in my eye was. Finally, I of the doctors in Dr. Yau's office said he was going to deaden the eye/eye lid. Guess what he found ... an eye lash. I also had an infection in my eye. I know the nursing staff and receptionists raised their eyebrows every time I called or came into the office as if to say "here she is again". After I told them what was found in my eye, I suggested to them that in the future they listen to the patient. They ignored me. I was never given any instructions (since I was not awake) as to what to do and what not to do. I now know that I should have been told not lower my face below my heart, not lift anything heavy, no water is to get in my eye, sleep on my back and use 2 pillows etc. I never had an eye patch from Dr, Yau. While waiting in the reception area before my surgery everybody came out with a patch over his/her eye. Since I was not awake I couldn't ask why I didn't have one. The next day since I had not received any post surgery instructions I drove myself to the doctor's office. I kept a diary of my experience which is more detailed but this report is a short synopsis of the dissatisfaction and disappointment I feel when I think about my dealings with Dr.Yau and how grateful I am that someone recommended the doctor who did my right eye. There was no pain involved at all. But most importantly he and his crew LISTENED to me .

I am a professional scientist and professor living in the Silver Spring area. I stumbled across Dr. Yau by chance, about 9 years ago. Something was clearly wrong with one of my eyes. It turned out that I had an active viral infection in my eye, which was scarring the cornea and affecting my vision. Not only did Dr. Yau diagnosed and treated the infection effectively, but he followed up for as long as necessary, and also coordinated personally with another doctor I was seeing at the time. His bedside manner is impeccable, his professionalism outstanding, and he clearly stays up to date on knowledge and procedures. Possibly the most well-rounded medical doctor I have ever interacted with.
