Dr. Emery Hanyuan Chang, MD

Instead of helping me talking about a serious issue he was upset that I didn’t do the visit in person. He didn’t even try to ease the situation when I got upset. I blame whoever gave him this job.

After many visits and nearly 4 years of seeing Dr Chang I would constantly have to remind him of issues discussed time and time again. Condescending attitude. If you want a supportive, caring doctor, go elsewhere.

I don't know which dr Chang the guy with neg review with a drug addiction went to go see but the dr Chang at the CARE clinic never suggested a therapist instead of meds for me. I started seeing dr Chang in 2007 when I was heavy into drugs and my health was in a very bad state from HIV, drugs, and depression. I barely had any tcells left and viral load was really high. I had another doctor who made me feel like I'm an invalid for using drugs and was afraid to see another doctor because of it. I went to dr Chang because i was getting sick and he has been nothing but an awesome doctor. He never judge me for my personal choices and immediately got me on my regiment of drugs after running few tests,which I am still on. I will never forget the follow up visit when he got the results and I was a bit emotional. He assured me that I will be okay and that despite what I may have done in the past, I still can have a full life if I make some adjustments. He never said I need to go see a… therapist or judged me for using drugs by saying i wouldn't be compliant. I have been sober for quite a while now and I am as healthy as I was before becoming positive, and I owe that to dr Chang. If I pass the 6 month period to do check up because I'm busy, he checks in on me and reminds me to go in for a checkup. The fact that his staff is always professional and greets with a smile and his nurses are one of the best in the field makes it even better.

I have been to see Dr. Chang 4 times in a year and a half. He does not listen to his patients and he is never on time for my appointments even though I show up on time. He jumps to diagnosis without finding out any history and is quick to give pills without exploring other options first.

Dr. Chang elected not to start HIV medicine and referred me to psychotherapy because I have addiction. He believed I would be non compliant. While that might be a very big problem in general with addicts it is not one of my problems. I was already in treatment for addiction. I was also in an early stage of HIV with a viral load of 5 million and my t-cells were dropping quickly. The next doctor I saw told me I had to start HIV medication immediately or I would get very sick. I think Dr. Chang has personal problems that effect his clinical judgment. I am now sober for a year but still have a declining viral load.

He might look young but he does a good job listen to my medical condition a rare quality for many doctor these days. Getting appointment and re-schedule my appointment with Dr. Chang is always trouble free for me.

If you want a doctor that see's you on time, is available when you need him (although possibly at several different UCLA offices), that has terrific bedside manner, listening to what you have to say, this is the one. He truly cares about his profession, he volunteers his efforts to those in need, and is as dedicated as they come, and I rarely compliment or praise anyone. He's been our physician for 5 years and I have no complaints about his work (although UCLA's billing and medical information systems are very outdated).
