Dr. Evans Cecil Bailey, MD

Shocked at the incision size for a tiny Basel cell carcinoma on my chin that had been there only 3 months. Was told by Dr Bailey just prior to surgery that he was all for preservation of area as he drew a small diagram showing what he would do. Cut around the tiny area and send it to lab and when margin was clear he would stretch skin and close it up. It took a long time for him to cut and cauterize inside the sight and cauterize many areas before beginning to stitch the outside at which time he left the room for his female assistant to finish stitching. The drawing he showed me of the diagram he explained that he would cut around the area that my dermatologist had biopsied. I pointed out the area. He said that area he would remove and send to lab while I waited with opened surgical sight. It would not be closed until lab said all clear margins. The assistant came in about an hour later to say good news from lab that I had clear margin on first try. I later found out 48 hours later… when I removed the bandage that I was stitched vertically from under my lip all the way to under my chin! No dang wonder he got a clear margin! My idea of a conservative MOH surgeon was one that removed only a little bit at a time and sent to the lab one, two or three times if it takes it until there is a clean margin in order to preserve and unharmed the healthy area. I have not talked to him since the surgery on Monday and this is Thursday. My lip looks like a stroke victim but after calling office today they said the swelling takes 4-6 weeks to go down and I told them I had blisters today on my stitched area. I had followed instructions carefully and since I had allergy to polysporin I was advised on day of surgery to clean with soap and water, peroxide and apply Vaseline to incision. Leave bandage off after 48 hours at which time I began following instructions to clean area. My prayer is that I do not have permanent nerve damage and be left not only with a large scar but a strange looking bottom lip. I will return on 11-11-19 for appointment follow up. Hopefully I will get a good explanation from the doctor as why he was so aggressive with a tiny bump size Basel cell carcinoma and removed so much at one time before sending to the lab. I would have preferred he had sent it to lab numerous times and it come back with unclear margins instead of being so aggressive with the first removal that pretty well would guarantee a clear margin. Also, there was a sign on the door saying “no latex”. The assistant was about finished taping me up when I thought to ask if she was using paper tape. (Again the door had a sign no latex). She was not using paper tape and had to remove all the tape she had put on me and then applied the paper tape immediately on top of where she removed the other. After the 48 hours and me removing the paper tape there was much adhesive on my skin that I feel was from the latex tape she had first applied in error. This may have accounted from glue from latex tape that was not supposed to be used on me causing blisters on/around incision sight. I called and they called in a prescription for hydrocortisone cream which I have applied and it soothed the itching. I’m shocked at how a tiny I mean tiny Basel cell could have led to the aggressiveness of this surgery. I truly believe if doctor had taken a small scoop and then sent it to the lab it would have been a clear margin. People that have seen me say they could barely recognized me! Anxious to hear why this was done to me!

You will not find a better skilled Doctor than Dr. Bailey. He takes time to explain how and why he will do the procedure and answers all questions. He NEVER makes you feel he is in a hurry to get to his next patient. He is very compassionate and he calls with test results even at night. He has done a skin flap on my face and it looks great.

Dr. Bailey is awesome! Gentle, kind and very conscious about explaining the details of any procedure he is planning on doing. I feel very fortunate to have been referred to him for Moh's surgery on first, my chin and then my lip for skin cancer. I have all the confidence in the world in him and highly recommend him to anyone with skin cancer or any other skin issues.
