Dr. Helen Chan, MD

Why is this woman a pain management specialist, because she doesn’t practice pain management. After my one and only visit, I immediately walked out of Dr. Chan’s office and asked my pcp for a referral to a different, much more qualified Pain Management Specialist. On the day of my first and only office visit with Dr. Chan, I was in extreme pain from a severe, debilitating, disabling condition, that required surgery. The pain I was experiencing caused me to be bed ridden for weeks prior to my visit. Dr. Chan acted annoyed and irritated I was in pain. When she was sitting across the room, not physically examining me, when only asking questions, she repeatedly snapped at me to sit down and/or stop moving when standing. Yet, my pain was so severe, I couldn’t sit or stand for more than a few minutes. She wouldn’t lower the exam table from a sitting position to a more bed like position to help me alleviate my pain. She also did not appear to review my multiple MRIs and other… specialist notes before I entered the exam room. She was snarky, said I didn’t have x issue, and then misdiagnosed me with something completely unrelated, a condition I did not and never have had. Thankfully, multiple types of qualified specialists had a ready reviewed my condition and all agreed upon the diagnosis before a specialist set up the pain management referral. If Dr. Chan had taken the expected steps to review my file, the MRIs, the multiple specialists notes, she would have learned why I was given a pain management referral and not have misdiagnosed me. But I suspect she just doesn’t really care. All she seems to want is a pay day without doing her job. She is cold, impersonal, and I am not sure why she is in Pain Management. When first entering the exam room, I wasn’t greeted with “Hello, I’m Dr, Chan,” instead I was greeted with “I don’t prescribe pain meds” When I asked what alternative treatments were available, she said “none, I don’t have alternative treatments!” Wow! That’s how our visit began. Until recently, I’ve been an overall healthy person and have rarely had meds prescribed. The prescriptions I have been prescribed prior to our visit were basic meds like antibiotics. Honestly, why is this woman practicing pain management if she doesn’t offer treatments to alleviate pain, whether those treatments are meds or another alternative. And snaps at people who are trying to reposition their bodies to help ease their pain?!? Completely useless in her field. This was a complete waste of time and was very painful. The car ride caused a severe flair and the pain from the flair caused me to be bed ridden for another month following the visit. Thankful for my new pain management specialist, with a 2 month prescription and an outpatient procedure, he helped eliminate my pain which then gave me back my normal life, allowing me to function more normally, again. Dr. Chan is useless and cruel.

HORRIBLE DR!!! What a total waste of my time seeing her! Never again!l

I went to Dr Chan on a referral for chronic pain. When i first met with her she was cold and had 0 bed side manner. She made me feel as if i had some disease as if she was to get close to me she would contact herself and die. She is a poor excuse for a dr and should not be dealing with patients.She gave zero help. Could not even refer me to anyone but back to my primary who sent me to her in the first place, I left her office more depressed than when i went to her in the first place. Do your self a favor and go to another pain management dr.

Such a caring Doctor and has time to talk to her patients. Would recommend Dr. H. Chan to everyone ??

My neurosurgeon referred me to the Pain Institute of Southern Arizona and they assigned me to Helen Chan, MD. Although she may be a pleasant person which counts for something, but not very much when it comes to medical care. I do not recommend her or PISA. The staff and scheduling personnel are careless and inept!
