Dr. James Carpinter Cobey, MD

Dr. Cobey is indeed an old-style-country physician, but with up to date medical skills. He listens attentively and treats as if he genuinely cares about what is going on. He helped me immeasurably and I highly recommend him. My problems were due to acute pain in my knees.

Dr. Cobey walked me through my knee replacement and i was so greatful tho, scared. Its been three years and i still have problem with the knee as well as the right knee. But i can walk

Poor bedside manor. He constantly told my mother her bones were soft and she was fat. He is no spring chicken and could stand to loose some weight. He could care less what comes out of his mouth.

Although I am not a fan of his office staff, or of the Washington Hospital Center, which I can NOT stand, Dr. Cobey himself is alright. I had major surgery, broke my leg, had a rod inserted. I saw 2 other Drs after the procedure to get their opinions on Dr. Cobeys work, they agreed that he did a fantastic job. Since this was an unplanned surgery (no one plans to break their leg) I was carted into the hospital, I had no choice on which hospital or which Dr. I'm glad I had Dr. Cobey. I personally would not return to him though, this is mainly due to my burning hatred of the Washington Hospital Center.

I am quickly coming to realize that not all doctors are created equal. It is rare to find a doctor who is competent and empathic, Dr. Colby didn't strike me as either of these. Yes, I was able to get an appointment, I concluded this as more of a product of the lack of people interested in his services, and, yes, I didn't wait long to be seen, but these are the only possible strengths I have been able to identify. When I was seen by Dr. Colby, he spent the first few minutes trying to "warn" me of the difficulties of establishing a career in my field of profession. Second, he lectured me on how my chosen sport should be made illegal. Third, he called a recent surgical procedure I underwent as "dubious." He didn't bother to ask how I personally felt about the procedure, or how in just two months my pain has decreased dramatically. After enduring this rocky start, I was sent for x-rays. When I returned, he showed me my x-rays on a monitor in the hallway, so much for privacy,… rifling through six x-rays in mere seconds. His interpretation of the x-rays and his opinion consisted of a pessimistic outlook where he sentenced to me to a lifetime of elbow pain at the age of 27. At one point I asked about the danger of taking anti-inflammatory pills for prolonged period. Thankfully, Dr. Colby interrupted me immediately to inform me that "all pills are poison." He repeated this three times, just in case I had not felt adequately insulted the first two times. In retrospect, the only thing that was beneficial of this meeting was that I have some x-rays, which I am promptly taking to another specialist. I can not possibly recommend more that one bites the bullet and wait the standard month time period for an initial meeting with another specialist. Yes, waiting in limbo is terrible. Yes, it is fantastic to be seen a day after you initially call. But these simple pleasures will fade quickly once you realize why the wait was so short. In all, my actual time with Dr. Colby was about the time it takes to order a Subway sandwich. Do the smart thing, pass on Colby.

I was referred to Dr. Cobey by my PCP. A was in alot of pain and was able to get an appt. with a couple of days. Dr. Cobey haad me have x-rays done and told me the same day that I had alot of arthur in my hips and knees. We tried meds for about 6 mos. then did the total replacement on the left hip. 1 yr later

Dr. Cobey was assigned to my case in the ER. He performed surgery to reduce my shoulder and repair my shattered posterior humus. While still in recovery, my progress has been terrific. He and his staff have been most helpful and supportive all along the way.
