Dr. John D Macgillivray, MD

My experience with Dr. MacGillivray was outstanding from beginning to end. I highly recommend him. I went to Dr. MacGillivray for a broken collarbone. He explained what needed to be done and took time to answer my questions. He fit me into his surgery schedule just four days after my visit. His staff is highly efficient. The scheduling of appointments and all follow-up communication was excellent. The surgery itself was incredibly smooth. I was impressed by the whole experience at HSS. Everything worked like a well oiled machine.

He was highly recommended to me but I would NEVER recommend him! No bedside manner. Mis diagnosed my knee issue that he said was “nothing” and it’s actually is something and not good!

I would highly recommend him. Both my husband and myself both underwent shoulder surgery with him. He is a miracle worker and his office staff is very helpful and courteous. The office staff obtained MRI appointments that day and we were able to get our MRI and see the doctor for follow and schedule surgery that same day!

Saw him for a second opinion on Shoulder. His exam was very quick, and not thorough, and he seemed indifferent. My injury was very recent, and he said " why not operate because my injury might be nagging forever. " He also told me my acromium sp? was type 3 (which is a reason to cut) whereas three other doctors told me my acromium was type 2. In other words, I felt he was trying to persuade me into surgery without doing a thorough exam or even allowing PT enough time to work. My injury is relatively minor.

Dr. Macgillivary has the worst bedside manner of any doctor I've ever met. After my physical therapist referred me because of a suspected torn meniscus, I went to him in hopes he could take a look at my knee and help me figure out how to fix the pain I've had for months now. I was extremely taken aback by the lack of respect he showed me during the two minute appt, which I waited over an hour for. He was rushed and rude, and hardly gave me any time to describe my injury or ask questions about his diagnosis (which he made after touching one part of my knee for one second). When I tried to ask clarifying questions he answered them all curtly with his hand on the door, trying to get out of the room as quickly as possible. He told me I just have tendonitis and need physical therapy, which I have already been going to for 4 months! Although I hope he is right that it is only tendonitis, I plan to seek another opinion because he gave me no reason to trust him with the extremely rude way he… treated me. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone, and I wish I had not wasted my time (and those two minutes of his).

As long as you get an early morning appt, there is no wait. The staff was very friendly and Dr. Macgillivray was very nice and made you feel comfortable and at ease.

Dr. McGillivray and his staff were incredibly patient, helpful, and competent. He scheduled an operation on me on a day he doesn't usually operate out of concern for me. I really can't recommend him highly enough!

Mac is one of the finest diagnosticians and sports medicine/orthopedic surgeons in the United States. He's not only excellent, he is a marvelous, caring and comprehensive surgeon. My pleasure to know him and will attest by saying his repair of my biceps tendon "at the elbow/arm" is flawless. 4 years post-op, it still performs BETTER than the orig. connection from birth. On a scale of 1-10, Mac is a true "12!"

Excellent Doctor. Very confident. I went to him for ACL and menicus tear. After my first vist, I got the surgery scheduled within a week and the staff was very helping. The surgery went smooth and I am glad I went to him.
