John Clifton Wellons III III, MD

If I could rate a zero I definitely would. Dr. Wellons and his NP Elizabeth Vance were horrible to deal with in a very hard situation. Dr Wellons claims to be 'an expert' in hydrocephalus. This is a joke. He is aggressive when you ask him simple questions. He does not do proper imaging. He told my husband 'it was a dance between his 25 years experience and our son' Arrogance. After getting a second opinion, I do not see him as an educated man in his field. I'm sorry for the other babies like our son who have crossed his path. Please if you find yourself feeling the same way about this man...take your child elsewhere! It's sad that Dr. Wellons is the best Vanderbilt has to offer.

The best neurosurgeon ever he saved my daughter life and has great bedside manor. I thank God everyday for him he is the person that saved my child’s life. When we first met him my Child was brain dead and was hemorrhage on her brain from a AVM and after his miracle surgery and a lot of rehabilitation and therapy we are so thankful she is here and able to do so much.

He's extremely knowledgeable and talented. Very good neurosurgeon, there's no question there. Easily one of the top pediatric neurosurgeons in the state, possibly the country. That's why he can get away with poor bedside manner. Not bad with the children, he talks to them a little. But he isn't very good with the parents, which is important. You should be gentle when you tell a parent their child could become internally decapitated if they fall. You don't just blurt that kind of thing out and then look at the parents like they're absolute morons when they ask you questions about what would cause that and if it will go away. I'm not an idiot, but he certainly made me feel like one. He's good enough that I have recommended him, but it came with a warning about his bedside manner.

Dr. Wellons, along with his wonderful support staff, was instrumental in resecting a malignant brain tumor in my son. The single most important contributor for a cure to this type of cancer is total removal. My son is now cancer free. After craniotomy, radiation (proton), and chemo...he is a healthy, thriving 12 year old. Thank you UAB and Dr. Wellons!

Dr. Wellons performed an Anterior Temporal Lobectomy on me at the Durham Veterans Medical Center a number of years ago. I suffered from uncontrollable epileptic seizures from a closed-head trauma. He was always a true professional with a wonderful bedside manner. He has a wonderful sense of humor and was also very cordial with my visiting family members. He is a brilliant neurosurgeon who trained under the finest physicians at Duke. He changed my life with his skill and devotion.
