Dr. Jonathan H. Whiteson, MD

The first part of the story is actually what wonderful care my father received from NYU Langone – he travelled in from Central NJ for treatment of his congestive heart failure – it had gotten so bad that he was holding many pounds of fluids. Over the course of many days, with diruetics and adjustment of his other medications, he recovered and went from feeling horrible to very well. NYU Langone also referred Rusk Institute doctors for physical therapy while my father was still hospitalized which was also quite effective in his recovery. Toward the end of my father’s stay at NYU Langone, Dr. Whiteson visited my father. Although Dr. Whiteson didn’t do anything, he was extremely friendly, caring, attentive and respectful, and convinced us that before returning home to NJ, we visit him in his office. For an NYU doctor, it was surprisingly easy to get an appointment with Dr. Whiteson within a day or two. My father stayed with my family in Manhattan after he was discharged so he could… see Dr. Whiteson. When we saw Dr. Whiteson at this office, once again, he was very warm, caring, attentive and respectful, and although he didn’t do anything for my father on this visit (other than adjusting his cane), Dr. Whiteson suggested that my father travel on the train from Central NJ regularly for physical therapy with him in Manhattan. Although my father was interested, we had to politely decline because he was 80 years old and it was a completely impractical suggestion. Months later, my father fell and injured his leg and side and could hardly walk. He had such a good experience with Rusk Institute doctors that he decided to take Uber into New York City to see Dr. Whiteson and to see if therapy at NYU Langone/Rusk was available, like last time. We made an appointment with Dr. Whiteson which again, was very easy to get. On the visit, initially, once again, Dr. Whiteson was compassionate, warm, friendly and respectful, but when we inquired about a stay for physical therapy, in an instant, he intently stared at both of us and loud, demeaning voice, started repeating, “it’s not going to happen, it’s not going to happen, it’s not going to happen,” without any explanation whatsoever. If there was a reason he could not admit my father, such as Medicare would not cover it, or there were no available beds, or my father did not meet NYU Langone / Rusk guidelines, we certainly would have understood, we can take “no, unfortunately it is not possible,” for an answer – but he did not seem to want to bother to offer any. The speed with which Dr. Whiteson’s personality instantaneously changed from respectful to nasty, friendly to demeaning, warm to adversarial, and compassionate to aggressive, was utterly shocking. It was as if the mask came off and Dr. Whiteson was saying, “you are here to fill my schedule so I can bill Medicare and how dare you ask that I help you.” My 80-year old father (who was in a vulnerable state because he could hardly walk and was in pain) and I left feeling totally foolish, demeaned, used and manipulated. My father was treated in NJ and recovered, but this experience with Dr. Whiteson was truly unforgettable. It was the worst experience either of us ever had with a doctor.

One session and I was glad to get away from this guy. Langone really scraped the absolute bottom of the barrel to find this intolerable Brit. What kind of family produces cretins like this? Obviously Langone doesn't care who it hires to haul in the revenue. Whiteson is what you get in a hospital that can't even find decent human beings to fill positions. I'd sooner get my healthcare from a half decent veterinarian. GRADE F
