Dr. Kevin Ray Clawson, DO

I saw this rheumatologist twice over the span of four years. At my first visit, I was told my symptoms were fibromyalgia, that I needed to lose weight, reduce stress, and address my mental health. No autoimmune testing was ordered. I followed the recommendations—lost weight and pursued therapy—yet my symptoms continued. My primary care physician later ran an ANA (which this doctor had repeatedly refused to order), and it came back positive. When I returned with the positive ANA, it was dismissed as a “false positive.” I was again told there was nothing autoimmune happening and advised to focus on mental health and weight loss rather than further investigation. I sought a second opinion with another rheumatologist. After appropriate labs and imaging, I was diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, and started on biologic treatment. Because AS is a progressive disease where early treatment is critical, this delay resulted in permanent damage that… could likely have been reduced or prevented if my symptoms had been taken seriously earlier. If you have inflammatory symptoms or suspect autoimmune disease, I strongly recommend seeking a provider who listens, orders appropriate testing, and does not dismiss concerns based on weight or assumptions about mental health.

I actually see Dr. Clawson for treatment of my Psoriasis via Enbrel. He was the local doctor with the most experience with the drug. He is not a dermatologist, but does seem to have done his homework on my condition and has been an excellent doctor. Highly recommended.
