Dr. Mary Pell Abernathy, MD

If you are seeing Dr. Abernathy for high risk pregnancy before viability I 10/10 recommend finding a different MFM that will take you seriously as a patient. My water was broken from week 15-26. Every appointment with her she pushed for abortion. I was never put on bedrest before viability. The team at Union completely wrote me off and didn’t care about my baby until we reached viability, they tried to save my baby only it was too late at that point. If I had been treated with the same concern at the beginning of my pregnancy I truly believe we would’ve had a different outcome.

Would give 0 stars if I could. Horrible bed side manner.

This is not my doctor because I’m currently seeing a midwife. Due to me being of gestational age, Dr Abanathy was the one who had to review my ultrasound. When she came in to the room, she didn’t have a very nice or warming presence. She asked me if I was wanting to try for a vaginal birth this time around (my first one a csection due to being breech) and I said I was praying and hoping for a vagina birth this time around. She gave me a weird look like I was crazy for even considering it. She then basically tried scaring me into getting the covid vaccine because I declined it. Overall her bedside manner lacked in my opinion. She wasn’t warm and didn’t seem open minded at all if you question or decline whatever they try to push.

I am in Bloomington; I was sent to Dr. Abernathy b/c I have a high risk pregnancy. My first delivery was an emergency C section b/c the cord wrapped around her neck and prolapsed. My nurse had to little get on my bed with me and keep her hand inside me while they wheeled me back to surgery to help the baby. My 3rd pregnancy, we lost her at 36 weeks 4 days from another cord accident, she got tangled up in my cord and we delivered a stillborn. My doctor, Dr L suggested we try and take this, my 4th pregnancy, at 37 weeks to get get out of there as soon as possible. I met with Dr. A and to me, she did not seem very empathetic. She got on me about not getting my flu vaccine, asked me 2-3 times, "Are you sure you didn't have diabetes?" Yes, positive. I feel like she didn't even read my file. When I told her my cord prolapsed, she responded with, "What do you mean prolapsed?" She ended up saying, "well I recommend you wait until 39 weeks for a C section." So instead of taking the baby a… little early, I got a spend hours to half the day, at the doctor and hospital being monitored on machines... it has been very stressful, time consuming and expensive to do so. I did not have a good experience.

13 years ago, after having numerous miscarriages, I gave birth to a health baby girl.Prior to giving birth to my daughter, every specialist I went to told me I wouldn't be able to carry a child, and Dr. Abernathy told me I would. Her kind words and bedside manner was more than I could have ever expected, she's the best!

Dr. Abernathy & her staff are wonderful! Laurie, the U/S technician identified a problem during a routine ultrasound. Dr. Abernathy treated me for this precarious condition, as well as other problems that arose during the pregnancy. Despite the odds, I delivered healthy twins at 37 weeks. They never needed to spend any time in the NICU. My twins will be 2 y/o in April. I realize the condition I had, in & of itself is somewhat common, but the extent of my problem was indeed rare. I feel certain that the special management, monitoring, treatment I received was key in delivering two healthy people. I give the credit to God & Dr. Abernathy.

I was referred to Dr. Abernathy by my primary OB/GYN due to a high risk pregnancy. My husband and I were terrified in this pregnancy because of what had happened with our first pregnancy (preterm stillbirth). Dr. Abernathy put us both at ease and when we were with her, she made us feel like we were the only patients she had. Due to my condition, we saw her very frequently and I can honestly say that I actually looked forward to my appts with her. I remember the Thanksgiving that I was pregnant, both my and my husband's families both had illness that I couldn't be around. When telling her about that she said, "Well, if I had known that, I would have invited you over!". She was just so sweet, caring and professional. I felt more at ease once I entered her care and I feel that her expertise gave us a wonderful outcome: a 9lb 10oz beautiful baby boy!
