Dr. Matthew Robert Zapf, MD

Big problem with surgery scheduling department and office mgr Kelli. I saw Dr Zapf on 5/30/24. I contacted his surgery scheduler on 6/3/24 and she said they needed clarification for which shoulder replacement I would be having. A reverse or an anatomical replacement? Dr Zapf told me during my visit it was an anatomical. I called again on 6/5/24 and spoke with office mgr Kelli who told me he’d call Dr Zapf and have the order clarified. Kelli called me back on 6/6/24 and said it had all been clarified and he spoke to the surgery scheduler to go ahead and send request to OPTUM. On 6/11/24 I saw Ofc Mgr Kelli at the Palm Springs office and he reiterated that the issue was solved. Today on 6/12/24 I contacted surgery scheduler and NOPE, nothing had been clarified or corrected and Dr Zapf never responded to her requests for clarification. So Office Mgr is a pathological liar. I had to actually schedule ANOTHER OFFICE VISIT so I could speak with Dr Zapf MYSELF and watch him clarifying his… order personally while I was there. The soonest I could be seen is 7/18/24. So now I’m wasting ANOTHER MONTH because his office staff is incompetent and in the case of his office manager, also a LIAR apparently. If you schedule an appointment to see Dr Zapf, my suggestion is DO NOT LEAVE that office until he shows you his orders or reads them to you. Then go to his scheduler(they’re in the office next door) and ask her to look at the orders to see if there are any issues that would hinder her ability to request surgery authorization from your insurance company. Dr Zapf seems like a competent surgeon but I am having second thoughts due to his poor choice of office staff. My PMD Dr Ronald Bush has the absolute BEST office staff in Riverside County. They take care of the authorizations and prescriptions, etc before you leave the office. If you’re looking for a new Primary MD, call Dr Bush in Palm Desert.

Dr. Zapf really listens to your concerns. I was sent to him for second opinion after a failed first knee surgery. Now after a second knee surgery with Dr. Zapf, I’m back to hiking and biking.

I have several fractures in my left leg. Dr Zapf took care of it in a attentive and prompt manner. His bedside manner is admirable because he listens and answers to any concerns and shows care and understanding. Even the staff would show admiration for him and his work. Am so grateful to have found him

Dr. Zapf just completed Rotator Cuff Surgery on me and I would highly recommend him for any procedure! He has excellent “bed side manner” and is VERY good in communicating pre and post operation procedures (what to expect). He is very “approachable” and takes time to answer any and all questions! He is an fantastic surgeon and very pleasant man!

I do not recommend Dr. Zapf at Taos Ortho to anyone seeking care within the organization. He was very unprofessional, rude, unwilling to listen or answer questions and has one of the most terrible bed side manners I have ever seen in the 15 years I have been in the healthcare field providing care for others. As a patient I have never been treated so insensitivity or down right cruel by any medical provider especially a specialist and I will not be seeing him ever again!
