Dr. Mustafa Kendi, MD

Dr. Kendi joined PrairieCare in 2011. Dr. Kendi is originally from Turkey. He graduated from Hacettepe University in 1997 and completed his psychiatry residency at Ankara University in 2001 where he subsequently practiced as a psychiatrist. Dr. Kendi came to United States to continue his studies in brain imaging such as functional brain imaging and diffusion tensor imaging (advanced brain imaging techniques) at the University of Minnesota, Center for Magnetic Resonance Research followed by an additional residency in general psychiatry and thirteen months of child and adolescent fellowship. His experience at the University of Minnesota strengthened his belief that a functional approach to mental health treatment should be multidimensional including psychosocial approaches besides biological approaches and also enabled him to gain a deeper understanding of development and its effects on the presentation of psychopathology.

Dr. Kendi's experience and training in two very different …cultures has provided him a unique understanding of how intra- and inter-cultural variables can affect the establishment or the therapeutic relationship and psychotherapeutic processes. He believes that an approach that is simultaneously compassionate, trustworthy and exploratory enables him to help his patients make positive changes in their lives. Additionally, Dr. Kendi's considerable experience in the field of psychopharmacology allows him to use medications to reduce symptoms of emotional distress and help psychotherapeutic process.

His current interests include diagnostic uncertainties in the field, indications and limitations of medications in treating emotional distress and variables of a successful therapeutic relationship. He currently sees adolescents and adults at PrairieCare's Maple Grove site.
