Dr. Robert Joseph Benz, MD

Terrible experience with this doctor. He just did my back surgery and he did such a poor job, I ended up in the hospital as an inpatient!! And now I am in worse pain than I was before, and he said there was nothing else he can do. He also didn't do further testing to see what was really needed. And he charged me for every penny, including the xray which was part of the post op!! Now I am going to have another surgeon repair what he caused, I have scars everywhere, and huge bills to pay!

Dr Benz has done a neck fusion on me and a spinal fusion on my husband. We are both very happy with the treatment . We had only the best experience with these surgeries. Dr Benz answered all of our questions and made us feel very at ease during our time with the procedures. I am having some back issues now and I will only see him for the problem. I highly recommend him.

I am a young patient who was injured in a car accident and I went to see Dr. Benz to seek help and guidance. But I received the complete opposite. It’s a shame that doctors can’t actually care about their patients. He never made eye contact with me, told me I wasn’t in that much pain, and never even let me talk. He would constantly interrupt me with some nonsense and completely downplay any of my issues and concerns. He asked what I did for work and then proceeded to smock and say “oh yeah that’s a physically demanding job” yet failed to help me in any way shape or form. He was in the room for a total of 5 minutes.. Shame on this doctor for acting like his patients are a waste of his time. You’re a doctor. Do your job and do it correctly. I hope no one has to go see this man. You wont get the help you are seeking

I had the unfortunate experience of seeing Dr Benz yesterday as a follow up to a car accident. This is probably the worst I have ever been treated by a doctor. He told me that his life would be so much better if he never had to deal with car accident patients as they are a waste of his time. When I asked about how to get some pain relief if there wasn’t anything to be done medically, he literally laughed at me and said “I’m a surgeon” . He is condescending, rude, dismissive and will talk down to you. I have never felt so disrespected or so disregarded by a doctor. Perhaps he only treats women this way. UPDATE: I called and spoke to 2 different people who completely disregarded my issues with this man. I also asked his assistant (who is equally as nasty to people) if she could send my MRI request to a different imaging center and she said no. She claimed that she already accommodated my first request and would not send another one out for me. I have NEVER been denied the ability to… get imaging where I requested. This medical facility should be ashamed at how this doctor and his team treat people and the fact that they are ok with him treating people so poorly.

He was dismissive. Never asked how I hurt my back. Told me everyone has back pain and I can just do physical therapy. He didn’t seem to care I actually hurt my back well deployed. I was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. I spent more time waiting for him.

This was my first appointment with Dr Benz. He listened to what I told him and then continued to tell me what options there were for treatment and his opinion. He said it takes 12 weeks for my L4 compression fracture to heal. He said I could take walks and ride my recumbent bike. I was very pleased with visit. He took time to answer my questions.

Great doctor as far as I am concerned. Great and complete explanation of my problem (lumbar stenosis) and the solution upcoming. All staff very friendly and helpful.

I was really hurting and they got me in for surgery in 2 weeks. L-1-2-3-4-5 and S1 Very major. Been 6 months and done with physical therapy … still struggling to walk without a cane . BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD , since it was major it could take a year , maybe 2 . Six months check up I asked for an MRI and he said sure , let’s take a look ! He gave me Cymbalta for mild depression and maybe take edge off of the pain. We are just trying things ?? Very kind and workable with suggestions. Megan his nurse has been a doll . Returning all my calls !! Even over holidays. Sorry to read negative reviews ?? since that has not been my experience. I feel he is a very talented blessed man ??

I have been a patient at OCR for several years and seen several doctors for multiple issues, including surgeries. I received an invite to rate my last experience for a very needed appointment that I scheduled and waited over 6 months for BUT NEVER HAPPENED! I made many attempts to get an earlier date, including providing an mri requested by another Dr of mine in order to access the urgency. I called and made another attempt on 1/19/23 to see if there were any cancellations or sooner appointments (I had left messages for the PA regularly over the past 5 months with no responses)...I talked to Jess who said the appointment I had already been waiting 5 months for on 2/10/23 with Dr Benz said "operator error" and was given to someone else. She said the best she could do was give me an appointment with Dr Biggs late June in Greeley! I asked her to please send messages to management and PAs to try making this right.... again, never got a response! I asked my pain management Dr to refer me… elsewhere and had the same imaging sent there.... they contacted me right away because the Dr said there was urgency based on his review of my imaging! I'm very disappointed in Othopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies (OCR)!! I feel discriminated against and neglected.... can't help but think it could be due to the fact that I have Medicaid.

I'm giving Dr. Benz one star since this was my first appointment. I realize doctors are busy people, but that's usually because they over book patients. When I come in to see a doctor I expect some level of consideration and acknowledgement. If I had him on the clock I would say he spent less than 90 seconds with me. I spent more time with his PA and the x-ray tech. My issue is back pain in two locations. He took a quick look at my x-ray and said I should see a hip surgeon for surgery. Didn't look at anything the PA wrote down about my symptoms or issues. Yes, I probably need hip surgery, but I don't think that's the cause of my back pain.............I will get the MRI done and see him one more time, but I will probably end up getting a second opinion
