Dr. Shay Bess

Dr. Bess really listens well but overall my appointments wasted my time. I have a very extensive history for this particular problem. Before my appointment, I spent over an hour filling out forms and supplying detailed information on my history, by the office's request. After I scheduled my appointment, the office called me and said that Dr. Bess had a conflict and that I would be seeing the Physician's Assistant. I was certain, based on my history, that I was going to need spinal surgery and I wanted to meet the surgeon so I rescheduled so that I could see Dr. Bess. This meant I had to wait a few more weeks to meet with the doctor. When I arrived at that new appointment, they had P.A. Madison meet me. She is very friendly and polite, but she asked me many questions that I had already answered on the forms. She made a lot of false assumptions about my symptoms that I had to keep correcting. The office had taken my forms and Madison didn't seem to have the papers in front of her, so… when she asked me specific questions, all I could answer was "Yes, I've had many of those tests run. I don't recall the dates and locations. Please, check the paperwork I gave you." The appointment went on and on like this for quite some time. I was very frustrated because I have already seen many specialists and the P.A. wanted me to try all of the things I had already tried many times in the past. Eventually, she went and got Dr. Bess. He was more compassionate and seemed to listen to me better. He requested some new MRIs for me and those were useful. I returned many weeks later after the MRIs. They had me see the PA again. As last time, she was kind, but kept telling me certain things were not true about nerves. I had to keep explaining that I had already tried many specific methods in the past to help me and they were not helpful because my symptoms are anomalous and many doctors have discovered and told me that my innervation is not typical. Dr. Bess came in and agreed with me and my experience and negated some of what the PA had been telling me which did not apply to me. But then Dr. Bess wanted me to see a new pain specialist, not one of the ones who had done epidurals or nerve blocks in the past. The new pain specialist is a very far drive from where I live. I looked up the recommended doctor thinking that if he had higher reviews than the doctors I'd seen before, I would consider making the long drive and seeing him. Not only were his office's reviews bad, but he doesn't take insurance. I decided not to see that doctor recommended by Dr. Bess. After spending several months in this process, I decided to find another orthopedic surgeon. Ultimately, I found a great surgeon and that was a much smoother process. I had surgery with the new doctor and that surgery was successful.

DR.BESS and his staff and nyu are the best ,they take of you 120% all the time .I am a workmans comp case so you know the insurance co is horrible[sedgewick-]but DR.BESS and his staff have gotten me thru and finally to theraphy .DR.BESS from day 1 has been perfect with my back injury told me and showed me what the injury is and how he will treat it, and GOD forbid I need surgery ,,I have total faith in DR.BESS ,everyone I have talked with said they have been healed and their back fixed and pain gone .

Dr. Bess performed a laminectomy on me approximately six weeks ago. I woke up and had no pain in my legs, the reason the surgery was performed and no pain from the operation. He is the best and I highly recommend him. This was my second surgery,and I finally have a pain free life!

My husband and I found Dr. Shay Bess to be extremely thorough, thoughtful, and an unbelievably talented surgeon. We highly recommend him and are eternally grateful to him for his talents and devotion to children (our son in particular) and the field of medicine.

My thoracic curve was corrected from 90-something degrees to 25. I gained four inches from this surgery. Dr. Bess and his team did an amazing job.
