Dr. Sung Sam Lim, MD

My visit with this doctor was just awful. He acted as though he did not want to see me. When you are in pain and your body is going through something, you would like for the doctor to listen and offer help. Not doctor Lim. I never want to see him again. Get out of the business if you don't like seeing patients.

I have to see this 'doctor' once yearly to make sure my discoid lupus hasn't progressed into systemic lupus, a worse condition. When I began having awful joint pain, hair loss and daily fevers, I suspected it had indeed turned into systemic lupus. I tried to make an appointment to see him. His scheduler/nurse said the soonest I could be seen was in 7 or 8 months. Soon I began passing out, five times in five months. I asked his nurse to relay that information so that I could be seen sooner. She said she relayed the message but that he said no, he wouldn't see me sooner. She said Dr. Lim said that if I pass out again to go to the ER. A week later, I did pass out and took a very painful fall. I was taken to ER (and a heart doctor the following day). I called Lim's office again and relayed that information. His nurse said, days later, that he suggests I try a neurologist, but that he still won't see me any sooner. In the interim I saw another rheumatologist not affiliated with… Emory. That doctor's findings, including bloodwork, pointed toward systemic lupus. Again, I relayed that information, hoping for a diagnosis confirmation. Still, he won't see me sooner. I've called incessantly since I first made my appointment with Lim 7 or 8 months ago, asking if there were cancellations that would allow me to be seen sooner. Answer is always no. And never, not once, was I called and told of any cancellations. Horrendous experience. Consider yourself warned.

Dr. Lim was highly recommended so we made an appointment for my mother who has suffered from SLE (Lupus) for over 25 years and who had recently relocated to the Atlanta area. On the first visit, Dr Lim was brief and did not take the time to properly explain things, leaving my mother confused about her treatment plan. It was especially confusing as Dr. Lim made changes to her prescriptions which were not explained properly - increasing one med 4 fold in dose which did not seem right, however follow up calls to his office were not returned. We decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and keep her scheduled follow up visit. A few weeks later she suffered a set back and was hospitalised (we still do not know what caused the set back, but the attending physician immediately dropped the prescription that Dr. Lim had prescribed that was 4 times the level of what she had previously been taking). Despite numerous calls from ourselves as well as Emory hospital staff to Dr. Lim's office… to inform him of her stay & condition - we never heard from him. Several weeks after she was discharged we received an apologetic phone call from him informing us that there had been a 'breakdown in the patient portal system' and that he was only now receiving our messages. Again, we decided to give him another chance. At her follow up visit he seemed more engaged and interested in her condition. However because of the complexity of my mothers condition, there is a need for close monitoring of her treatment plan which has not happened. Requests for refills on her prescriptions have resulted in ZERO returns on our calls or the calls of the pharmacy for that matter. Perhaps it is just a breakdown in the system, however I am not convinced. We have had many wonderful experiences with Dr.s in the Emory system so it would be really bizarre for breakdowns in communication to occur only in his office. The question remains, is it Dr. Lim or his staff? I am sure he is a competent physician, however after several failed attempts at decent care, we feel as if we have no choice but to seek a different rhumatologist for my mothers care.
