Dr. Suzanne P Nelson, MD

My child got seriously ill while under Dr. Nelson's "care." The appropriate diagnosis and treatment were available from the research of her colleagues at Lurie, but she never mentioned it as a possibility. While my child was starving due to GI disorder, and without any interviewing of my child or me about our family dynamics, she said nothing was wrong physically and referred us to her psychologist. I begged her for appropriate tests or hospitalization and she did not respond to me. Within a month of changing doctors and receiving appropriate medical treatment, my child started to recover. Beware.

My child almost died under Dr. Nelson's "care." Shockingly, the appropriate diagnosis and treatment were available from the research of her colleagues at Lurie, but she never mentioned it as a possibility. My 16-yr old daughter and I had a surprisingly upsetting first-time experience with Dr. Nelson. The staff and the nurse were wonderful. The doctor, upon entering the room and greeting us, made a comment: "I am so glad it's Friday, I get to sleep in tomorrow". Throughout the evaluation she was vague and did not provide answers to my questions about my daughter's problem. She was rude and insensitive to a 16-yr old kid. It seemed that she was just interested in scheduling an endoscopy, however she did not provide much information as to why she believed one was necessary or how it would help. She appeared to be in a rush and did not even ask my daughter for a 24-hour meal recall, which is a basic part of any GI evaluation (I can speak to this as I am a nurse practitioner). Upon exiting the building, my daughter, who is a tough kid in general, burst out crying with the words: "Mom, I didn't expect them to solve my problem right away, but I was at least hoping for a nicer doctor".

I thought a pediatric specialist would be warmer towards my daughter. I understand she sees children who are much sicker than mine, but I found her dismissive. My daughter has a chronic illness she had been suffering with for almost two years by the time we came to see this doctor. I don’t feel like she cared or offered much help. We ended up going to a different doctor.

When we found out my daughter was sick, Dr. Nelson came highly recommended. Because of the nature of how ill my daughter was, she was able to see my daughter quickly and start ordering tests. We had no idea what was going to happen down the road for my family, it was a terrible nightmare..... but daughter is now doing very well because of Dr. Nelson. She was by our side every step of the way, she was honest and her bedside manner was comforting. I can't say enough good things about her. Thank you Dr. Nelson!

Dr. Nelson and her staff were fantastic. We were able to get a first appointment within a few days. Other doctors we called said it would be 3-4 weeks before we could get in. She took a lot of time with my son, and she was thorough in explaining both his diagnosis and next steps. Fantastic bedside manner and very down-to-earth with both child and parents. We went to a follow up appointment that was just as professional and helpful. A+ experience!

When a child has a heartburn, a doctor shouldnâ??t just suggest to sleep on a more elevated pillow and not to eat late at night, I can get all of that info from Google. I need an actual involvement of a specialist. After more time of suffering, we had to go to another doctor, who actually ran some tests, and found H. Pylori.

Dr. Nelson was a wonderful. She was very nice and listened to everything I was saying and explained everything in a way I understood but didn't make me feel stupid. Her personality is very relaxed and she makes you feel at ease. I recommended her to my sister and niece and would recommend her to anyone looking for a pediatric gastroenterologist.

The doctor was very kind to my daughter, including her in the conversation. It was easy to get an appointment to fit our busy schedule.

Dr. Nelson is great with my son who has a developmental disability. She takes time to explain things to him and listens to his sometimes "not on topic" comments. At our appointments, she listens to our concerns, explains the reasons behind her approach to the problem, and is very prompt at sharing test results. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing a GI doctor for their child.
