Dr. Theodore Roland Hofstedt, MD

I am a high above knee amputee due to this horrible excuse for a doctor. He botched my ACL surgery, caused an infection & failed to diagnose. He destroyed my life! Run don’t walk away from him.

Dr Hofstedt was the most wonderful Doctor I have ever been to. I went in for ongoing shoulder pain. To the point of sleepless nights. He examined my shoulder and diagnosed my condition immediately. He performed a total shoulder replacement in my left shoulder and now I can move my arm normally without pain!!!!!! I am back to work and actually enjoy life again! I highly recommend Dr Hofstedt and his staff is wonderful! It has been 1 1/2 years and I'm very content and relieved.

I gave one star only because I was required to. I have a horror story with shoulder replacement. He had previously repaired a torn rotator cuff on left shoulder. For some reason I had a history of this injury so when I tore the right shoulder for the 3rd time in 2010 without a question I saw Theodore Hofstedt. Only option was shoulder replacement. Things didn't go so well this time. First he was late for the scheduled surgery and I asked if maybe we should do it another time because he might be flustered and he said he was fine. I was on the operating table all day because when he moved the apparatus to check it a bone broke and a new apparatus was needed. The company in Tempe had to deliver a new apparatus which had to be positioned differently because of the broken bone. I was on the table all this time..of course I wasn't aware of this until I got to my room. I have never had the full use of that arm even tho he put me through therapy for ever and ever and therapists… thinking I wasn't trying because I couldn't do what was expected of me. I can't reach out in front of me, can't raise it more than waist high just a sample of what my limitations are. Finally found out from another surgeon that it's installed improperly and can only be fixed by doing a couple more surgeries. He was always so sympathetically sorry for my situation. I say sympathetically because he was so sympathetic I ended feeling sorry for him. He never let on even after x-rays everytime I went for check ups that there was no hope for me and why did he have me in therapy for so many months knowing that it couldn't ever be a fully working arm again. He thankfully no longer does surgeries. Now he owns a therapy company. Ironic!!

My most memorable moment was when he failed to diagnose an infection and I nearly lost my leg as a result of it. I was getting cortisone shots in my knee that he replaced and got an infection. First of all, you shouldn't be poking anything into a sterile area. I took it upon myself to get a 2nd opinion and my new Doctor diagnosed me instantly. I had to have the knee replacement taken out, and cement spacers filled with antibiotics put back in for 4 months while also taking IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. I wasn't able to bend my leg for 4 months and while my new doctor was in cleaning up the infection, I lost a lot of bone due to the infection. It's been almost a year later now and my leg is still here, but I have a great deal of pain and my mobility isn't the greatest. I've also had a hip replacement from Dr. Hofstedt, and it's never felt comfortable. When I asked my new Doctor to check that out, he said he wouldn't have used that technique, but there was nothing he could do about… it right now.. There is so much more I could write, but I don't want to relive the memories. I don't believe he is doing surgeries any longer due to an illness, so I won't kick him when he's down. But I at least have a leg to do so if I should choose to.

I received a hip replacement from Dr Hofstedt. The day after the surgery, I told him and his assistant that it felt loose. They sent me to get a CAT Scan. Next thing I know, I am getting released from the hospital. I ask the nurse about the loose hip feeling I have and she says that according to the Dr. , it was fine and CAT scan showed no looseness. Three days after release from the hospital, the hip dislocates. I am taken to the ER and they pop it back in. I go home and it pops out again. Now the paramedics take me to Hofstedts hospital. Dr Hofstedt does a closed reduction to determine why it is dislocating. After the procedure, he apologizes to me and tells me the wrong size implant was used and he would have to perform a revision to put the correct size in. So 10 days after the original surgery, he does a revision. I get released from the hospital three days later and on the night I get released, I develop a fever. 101 temp. I call Dr Hofstedt late in the eveneing. … He tells me to come to his office the next day. The next day he looks at the wound and says it looks ok and there is no infection but he will put me on an antibiotic as a precaution. The next day I am not feeling any better and see a family doctor. He does a culture on the wound and it is infected with gut bacteria. I need to get a PIC line, have IV antibiotics for 4-5 weeks and get sick from that. Then I need two surgerys to clean out the infected tissue. I am lucky I caught it early or I would have had to get another revision. There were so many things that were not handled correctly with this Doctor. I also had to have about three blood transfusions. He took 4 hours on one of the surgerys! His staff is horrible, the hospital, I was at is horrible, he does not listen to me when I tell him it was loose or infected. I had my other hip replaced a few years after Hofstedt botched my surgery. I found a more competant Dr. than Hofstedt. I would recommend you to beware of using Hofstedt. He does not listen and really messed up my procedure.

Find a doctor who cares about a little bit more than this guy will.

I have no complaints with the surgery or the surgery center. The follow up care hasn't gone so well. I was not put in physical therapy until the 5th week and although I was given 2 exercises to do at home one was explained so poorly I wasn't doing it right. I can't say for sure those are the reasons but my shoulder froze up causing lots of pain for longer than should have happened. Getting prescriptions, or records from the staff was difficult. Then the doctor seemed annoyed that my shoulder was freezing up, no bedside manner. Just an overall unpleasant experience.

Had shoulder surgery recently. Dr. Hofstedt has great a great rapport. He's friendly, explains things well and is competent. The medical equipment representative who dropped off an ice machine for post-surgery said he's friendly and was pleasant to meet with when doing business with him.
