Dr. Andrew Nguyen Luu, MD

Thank you Dr. Luu! I am 61 years young and had my hip replaced 10 months ago. For nearly 8 years, I limped around in pain with every step taken. Walking from one location to another, no matter how far, was very labored. Looking back, it was like carrying around a piece of my body that had died-my left leg/hip. Fifty years of working out and 35 years of heavy lifting wore away cartilage in the joint. Feb. 17th was the big day and following surgery, I walked with a walker. On the 4th post surgery day, I was stepping away for a few steps without the walker. (Not sure Dr. or Physical Therapist would approve), but that is how fast and good things were feeling with steps taken. I'd get back to the walker with a feeling of a little kid possibly getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Am I supposed to be doing this this fast? By the 9th and 10th days I was walking fairly well, being careful of course. By the 3rd and 4th months of post surgery, I was gliding along and almost forgetting… I'd had the surgery. From 5 to 6 months post surgery and on, it's been incredible. It took me about 6 years to figure out where I was going to end up for this procedure. I had communicated with surgeons in Australia, Philippines, Hawaii and U.S. mainland, due to friends and acquaintances who had been through it at these locations. There are some fine surgeons out there but ended up at PIH Whittier Hospital with Dr. Luu. Each person I'd spoken to about their hip replacement surgery always talked about using a cane, following 1-2 weeks of having a walker to assist. Close by our Air B & B in Whittier, Ca., was a CVS store I had eyeballed prior to surgery, thinking, "That's where I'm going to buy my cane." Well, I never ended up buying the cane and had gone straight from walker to walking. I am grateful to be a healthy person who experienced a speedy recovery. I am so fortunate to have met and experienced Dr Luu's expertise with my hip replacement. He's a great person to talk to and informative about what needs to be done. To sum up the entire experience: The way my hip feels now is as if I never had pain or trouble walking for 8 years; it feels as if I never had surgery. Thank you Dr. Luu
