Dr. Bernard Francis Morrey

Highly qualified staff, but Dr. Bernard Morrey is the best.!

In 1998 I came to the Mayo Clinic to have a very painful left hip condition treated. When I met with Dr. Morrey, he looked at my chart and asked if I had ever been to the Mayo Clinic before. I told him I had about 25 years ago to see about having my left hip replaced. Dr. Morrey asked if I remembered what doctor I had seen. I told him "no, that was about 25 years ago." When Dr. Morrey said, "It was me, you should not have been able to do the things you were doing with that hip." My jaw just dropped. A world renowned doctor remembered me over a period of time in which he treated hundreds of other patients. I tell this story to this day and I will never forget what that meant to me in my life. When I was 11 years old I had a serious problem with that hip and was bedridden for over a week before I was admitted to a hospital and diagnosed with Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatoid Arthritis. My feet never touched the floor for 3 months. I was transferred to Gillette Hospital for… Crippled Children where the correct diagnosis was made. My hip was out of joint, the cartilage almost destroyed and worse yet, I had an infection in the hip that my doctor told me would have been fatal in less than 2 months. After 2 months of traction to pull the hip back into place and let it fuse, a year of wearing a full length leg brace and additional time on crutches, I was able to walk without assistance. I was not able to play any sports for 3 years due to the leg being almost 3 inches shorter than my right leg. Gradually I worked my way back into sports activities and participated competitively in baseball, slo-pitch and fast-pitch softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and racquetball, golf, bowling and flag football. I was able to gain All-Conference honors in basketball my senior year, hit 2 grand slams in my last high school baseball game, struck out 17 batters in Legion game and pitched a no-hitter in another Legion game. when the pain I would experience in those activities became worse than what I got out of a sport I stopped participation in that sport. After my hip replacement I was still able to golf. God bless you Dr. Morrey, you have allowed me to live a good life under some adverse circumstances. I am 78 now but your memory will be with you the rest of my life.
