Dr. Derek Keith Richardson, MD

Richardson is a bad apple and sham psychiatrist. My review and others before me are gentle compared to the fear, anger, sadness, and pain you will experience from a mental health visit with him. I am thankful for the reviews before me and wish I had read before my visit to spare me the added depression, anguish and anxiety. He failed to treat, address my new concerns. He shamed my mental health crisis and instead attempted to discredit, humiliate and confuse me. He asked me unethical and emotionally triggering questions with disdain and a smirk. He is cold, mean and intentional like a bully who doesn't care about mental health.I cried and screamed after the call.I told him he's the worst and a narcissist. He just gave a joker's grin.He saw the pain and insecurity I experienced with him. He delighted in being an antagonist and delaying care and continued prescriptions. He lacks moral character and ethics.. Kaiser based on the reviews this man has not been or reprimanded or counseled.

I have been seeing Dr. Richardson for over 2 years and am pleased with his methods. He thoroughly diagnosed me and actually did a deep dive before sharing his prognosis which I so appreciated. I actually liked his probing and curious questioning to force me to broaden my view and to look at ways to successfully modify my behavior instead of just upping my meds. He pushed me to go deeper and to work on me. He gave me to-do lists and recommended at my requests a therapist who would push me to reach my better self without patronizing me, berating or belittling me. Dr. Richardson steered me towards someone who is willing to call me on my stuff with care and consideration and who is willing to put in the work to push me higher and provide me with life time tools to consistently propel me forward . When I first met Dr. Richardson, I admit that he wasn’t warm and fuzzy, however, I didn’t need warm and fuzzy, I needed help with depression and grief and I needed coping skills to deal with… leadership at my job. Those are he things that Dr. Richardson assisted me with. Overtime I grew more and more comfortable with Dr. Richardson and he appeared to be more comfortable and relaxed with me. I have referred others to him as well.

Just like literally every review here. Condescending, ignorant, and unwilling to listen. Needs his license revoked.

This doctor thinks he is Dr. House, but forgot the part of being a good doctor.

From the get-go-rude, condescending, cold, the other reviews are spot on. First time, I saw him zoom appointment, He said, "I didn't seem like I was anxious (or some description, OCD, whatever) " but "He sees more depression." That is how he determined my meds. Does he know that every person who is diagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar, whatever, does not have the symptoms at every second of every day? He acted like he didn't believe me when I said things! He should absolutely not be in the field he is in. You couldn't pay me enough to see him again

I had been seeing a different and wonderful psychiatrist for three years to help me cope with my depression, anxiety, and OCD. Then I had to change insurance. This is the only reason I left my previous psychiatrist and got stuck with Dr. Richardson at Kaiser. I had been on a medication regimen that took three years to perfect. I was happy, functioning, and experiencing no unpleasant side-effects. The first thing Dr. Richardson did was take away one of my anti-depressants, saying I didn't need it because I didn't "seem depressed." He took away one of my anxiolytics, saying that I "didn't need it" and that it was "easy to abuse." He threw some different meds into the mix, and those caused a marked increase in anxiety and agitation as well as bruxism and other unpleasant side-effects. He would not believe me when I told him about my previous doctor's diagnoses and said that I only "seemed to have" generalized anxiety. He did not even address my OCD, brushing it aside completely and… telling me that he wanted to yank my OCD meds as well because they were "unnecessary." He did not listen to me when I told him that the medication he put me on was causing unpleasant side-effects, like bruxism. His reason for not believing me was that it was a "rare side-effect" and that bruxism wasn't "impossible, but it's unlikely." Okay, but if your patient tells you that they ARE experiencing the rare side-effect, why would you tell them that it's unlikely that it's happening? I think I would know better than him what side-effects I was experiencing. He is robotic, unkind, inconsiderate, and rude. He neither empathizes nor sympathizes. When I told him that I drank up to two small cups of coffee a day because I had a newborn baby, he looked at me like I had just told him that I snorted an entire eightball of cocaine prior to my appointment. He is patronizing and condescending and told me that I needed to stop drinking coffee because it would just worsen my anxiety and that I needed to "stop thinking about what feels good now, and think more about what's good for me." And this was in response to two cups of coffee. It's not like I chug a six-pack of Red Bull every day or drink an entire pot of coffee. I have maybe 12-16 fluid ounces of coffee in a work day. I had had three appointments with Dr. Richardson and he never once learned to say my name correctly, and it's not a difficult name by any means. He does not make good eye contact, but when he does the apathy he feels is clearly written across his face. He made no efforts to get to know me at all, and was only interested in what medication he could remove from my carefully curated regimen that another, much more talented and intelligent psychiatrist took pains to create over the course of three years. Seeing Dr. Richardson only made me feel helpless and hopeless. As a result of his reckless adjustment of my medications, all the strides I had made with my previous psychiatrist were very nearly totally undone. He is careless when it comes to your mental health, and if you're actually interested in getting well I would strongly suggest that you avoid Dr. Richardson at all costs.

If I could give this guy negative stars I would!!!! I just had the worst experience in my life with this guy. He made me feel embarrassed and ashamed. He was condescending and accusatory. He was so robotic and unsympathetic even after he could see that he had visibly upset me. I was so upset that I had a panic attack in his office and he seemed unconcerned. I came out worse than when I went in for sure. I can't believe that he is allowed to practice, especially with patience with mental health issues. Would NEVER recommend this guy!

I saw Dr. Richardson for depression and anxiety. He asked the usual questions. During his questioning me, I sensed a tone of irritability in his voice. His manner seemed robotic, unfeeling. I started to shut down, and had no desire to share my personal information with him. His office was small and uncomfortable. I could get more help talking to a wall. I waited 6 weeks for this completely worthless appointment.

Dr. Richardson was, quite simply, the worst doctor I've ever been to in my life. Let's leave it at that. After 3 visits I cannot recommend him for any adult and NEVER for any child. I am relieved to go elsewhere. Shame on Kaiser Perm for keeping this doctor on staff! He is terrible in almost every way a mental health professional can be. I cannot believe he keeps his license. His online reviews are all horrible. I wish I had read them before I scheduled. Patient, beware. Read the reviews.

Derrick doesn't have his client's best interests at heart. Its more so about what he is acclumated to; not what the patient is used to for treatment. I saw another doctor at Kaiser before seeing him. Both doctors had horrible reviews but gave both the benefit of the doubt and kept the appointments. Lets just say these reviews didn't lie. I'm not sure if psychiatrists are just cold and unconcerning by nature, but the last two Ive seen certainly fit that mold. Currently looking for a psychiatrist that will understand my needs and take them into consideration before telling me what they are and not going to do. Every case is different.
