Dr. Egon Doppenberg was born in the Netherlands. He pursued his medical education at the prestigious University of Utrecht in his home country before moving to the United States for an NIH-funded Clinical Research Fellowship in severe traumatic brain injury. Subsequently, he completed his neurosurgical residency at the Medical College of Virginia, followed by a fellowship in brain and spine tumor surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas in Houston.

Dr. Doppenberg's career includes an appointment as an Assistant Professor in Neurosurgery at Northwestern University and a tenure as Vice Chairman of Neurosurgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He also served as Medical Director of Clinical Operations in Neurosurgery at Advocate Healthcare. His previous position was Medical Director of Neurosurgery at UW Health Northern Illinois. His contributions to the field of neurosurgery include numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters and invited lectures. He holds a patent in spinal instrumentation.

In addition to his clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Doppenberg has participated in numerous medical mission trips to Latin and South America, reflecting his commitment to global health.

He advocates for conservative treatment when appropriate and emphasizes the importance of patient involvement in understanding their diagnosis and treatment options.

What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? Working in the sanitation department of a psychiatric hospital. Seeing the loss of control over ones’ thoughts is one of the most devastating diseases.
