Dr. Gary S. Lissner, MD

Absolutely excellent. My daughter was treated by Dr. Lissner and he is the best doctor I’ve ever experienced. Truly life-changing.

Waited with my infant son who was the patient and toddler for over TWO hours. After exhausting all of my DVDs and snacks that I brought to keep them calm during the wait I left to feed them as it was way past lunch time. To make matters worse I was billed for the appt even though I never saw the doctor and when I called to appeal it they said it was because the resident saw us for all of 2 minutes, asked us a whole bunch of questions and had no idea what my child's condition was, gave us NO medical advice and left. Can't believe that I was charged to contribute to some other doctor's education and received absolutely NO medical treatment or advice whatsoever.

One of the WORST experiences to date. After waiting 2 hours to talk to the doctor, he comes blazing in the room, doesn't shake my hand, doesn't introduce himself, hops right on the computer and starts reading my file. Everytime I went to speak, he'd talk over me almost argumentively stating "well it says right here"! I also conveyed to his assistant that I was 5 months pregnant before making the appointment when discussing whether or not id be needing topical surgery on my eyelid. His assistant even went ahead and scheduled me a follow up surgery date so I would be all set. The doctor instead told me that "there's no WAY he'd operate on a pregnant woman even if it WAS old by my OBGYN"! Even after I told him I had just had foot surgery with a local anesthetic that was ok'd. This didn't seem to concern him whatsoever as he SHOVED my file back at me and said "you won't be charged for today TAKE CARE"!

Hm. What I liked: He saw me quickly (but that was because a scheduler took pity on me when I started crying from frustration - I didn't care if they didn't take my insurance-I needed help quickly). He did a good job lancing & draining my tear duct and later irrigating my tear duct. What I didn't like: He argued with me and was dismissive of me when I told him duct was still not right. If I was in his office for 15 minutes, he was typing on his computer 12 of those minutes. He had no interest in actually finding the root of problem...when asked if it could be a result of a sinus issue, he replied "I'm an opthalmologist". He might as well have verbalized what he was thinking "you stupid idiot", because that was his tone. When I asked if I should see a sinus doctor, he said "I guess you could". Really?? I had thought: this is Northwestern, they know what they are doing. Maybe they do, they just don't care. His Physician Assistant was very good

Dr. Lissner is nice enough, but never// washed his hands at two visits. Further the equipment was never cleaned--used and put back in the drawer until the next patient. Both his hands and measuring equipment touched my eye (as I guess they did the previous six patients or more). Unacceptable. What was really disgusting was that he charged me $600 for the office visit... on top of $800 for three tests performed in his office the same day. NOT scans or xrays--these were VISION tests. I kid you not. How would that make YOU feel?

Real pain trying to make an appointment

The communication to make appointments is terrible. There seems to be a disconnect or a power struggle with the staff and the clients. If it is this difficult to make an appointment for a procedure, how difficult will it be if there is a concern or problem. If Dr. Lissner cared about his patients, the staff would be more efficient and caring to the clients. I would recommend trying another office for your procedures.

Dr. Lissner is very experienced, so he knows what he is talking about, but he can come off as abrupt or annoyed. I found that he gets bothered when you are asking a question that he thinks he answered already or running behind schedule. Overall, he's a good doctor.
