Dr. Gary Mason Wilkes, MD

Dr. Wilkes’ involvement in my father’s care was one of the most upsetting and harmful experiences we’ve had throughout our medical journey. My father was admitted in a vulnerable state — recovering from open heart surgery, suffering from post-op delirium and acute illness. and in the midst of a devastating cognitive spiral that none of us were prepared for. He couldn’t advocate for himself. He couldn’t explain what was happening to him. I was his voice — his legal medical POA — and yet Dr. Wilkes never once reached out before, during, or after his evaluation. Instead, he labeled my father with permanent psychiatric diagnoses after a single, shallow encounter while he was withdrawing off of a medication he had never been on. He never asked who my dad was three months ago. No effort to understand his baseline. No investigation into what might have caused this sharp decline — no imaging, no neuro consult, no curiosity. Just sedation and psych labels. He even prescribed medications my… father had severely reacted to in the past. After three days of me trying to reach him, Dr. Wilkes finally agreed to speak with me. The call lasted under five minutes. He was condescending, passive-aggressive, and kept interrupting me every time I tried to share crucial information. When I calmly asked about treatment options and how to safely support my dad’s recovery, he recused himself from the case — but not before submitting grossly inaccurate notes that misguided future providers who read them. This is not just unprofessional. It’s dangerous. Dr. Wilkes made no attempt to understand what was truly happening to my father. He ignored the family entirely, fast-tracked sedation over diagnostics, and undermined any chance of real recovery. The fact that this pattern is echoed in other reviews tells me everything I need to know: families have been raising the alarm, and no one is listening. I don't know what was worse, his attitude towards humans or his ideation of "treatment" If your loved one is vulnerable, recovering from trauma, or experiencing cognitive changes — advocate hard, and if Dr. Wilkes is assigned to their case, proceed with extreme caution and get a different doctor IMMEDIATELY.

Joined my father for what was supposed to be a "family visit". My father failed to clarify the intent of our visit and I was bombarded with an aggressive tone inquiring about why I was there. I shared my perspective and was interrupted being told my answer was not clear and I am being defiant. Mind you this 60 seconds into walking into the room. If I am there to share, why would I be defiant? This man is unprofessional, aggressive, demeaning. I would not recommend him to the devil.
