Dr. James Keith Mckechnie, MD

Avoid this MD or you will really regret it. He is the most greedy, incompetent doctor I have ever seen.

In 2002 I was in college at Eastern Illinois University. .05% of Scoliosis surgical patients get this infection & it's due to no fault of the Dr. & is unknown by the medical community why this happens. In 1993 I had an amazing Dr. in Chicago perform my surgery to straighten my spine. 10 years later I was one of the "lucky" ones. I called my surgeon & he knew exactly what was going on. Without a car & relying on the kindness of my roommates for rides he found me the only Orthopedic Dr. in town at the time. I regret ever seeing him. My surgeon asked him to perform a debridment surgery one me. Sadly the infection went all the way to the rod hooks & clips & he said he couldn't do a debridment & would have to put a perm IV (PICC Line) in me. He said he had no idea what he was treating bc the cultures he tested didn't show anything. I asked him to test them again & he refused. I told him my insurance would pay & I would go to Chapaign to Carle Hospital, at the time, & find a different Dr. if… I wouldn't do what I wanted. He tested them again w no results. I asked for one last try he refused so I told him what my father wanted me to have him do, "Can you please call my father at his law office, he'd like to speak to you about the treatment plan you have for me to see what you have planned." Dr. McKechnie said "Did you say his Law office?" "Okay I'll tell the lab to test the cultures a 3rd time & anything else you need you just let me know." Then he said to me the following day after I had my PICC Line inserted in my arm going to my heart "I am not sure what exactly I am trying to treat so I am going to throw you on this medicine and hope it works." Hope it works, what kind of Dr. even says this or even follows this practice. He was a total hack Dr. I thought. I was away from home without my parents until they could rush down to see me the following day so I was scared for my health & my safety w this Dr. Then the guy sent in to see me who was covering for Dr. McMckechnie comes into my hospital room with a cowboy hat on. Really what kind of Dr. wears a cowboy hat in a hospital. Totally unprofessional! I was "thrown" on Vacomycin & needed Bunn & Creatine tests once a week as this was very dangerous for my kidney's & liver he told me. I switched my care back to my surgeon in Chicago 6 weeks later when this medication wasn't working, my back was still oozing puss from the incision site on my spine and the pain was so bad I had to sleep sitting upright. My surgeon was shocked at the medication he had me on and esp. the high dose. He said it wasn't safe for someone of my stature 5' & 105 lbs & he immediately switched me to Rocephine. Turns out I had a Vancomycine resistant infection which even the Rocephine didn't work. I had the rods removed by my surgeon in Chicago. But this Dr. is VERY unprofessional & needs A LOT more training. I wouldn't go to him ever again, even if he was offering his services for free. I wouldn't even give him one star but it won't let you leave it blank.

Dr. McKechnie is outdated on his procedures and assumes that he does not need further education.
