Dr. John Phillip Essepian III, MD

I recommend getting a second opinion before using Dr. Essepian. He did not discuss the options that other physicians offer, which are usually covered by insurance. He recommended only a bifocal lens procedure that has risks and cost over $10K. The results are not impressive. I still wear glasses. For peace of mind, first talk to another doctor that educates you on all of your surgical options. Best of luck.

Dr. Essepian fixed both of my cataracts and was kind, gracious, and punctual. I chose him because he has the skill to do complex cataract cases that others try to avoid. I was able to get rid of my high myopia with lens implants and am delighted with the quality of my vision.

I could not put in words my gratitude for Dr. Essepian’s skill as a surgeon . On two occasions he improved my eyes. I was blinded from an unfortunate circumstance in one eye five years ago . It left me with a permanently enlarged pupil that was cosmetically saddening. He successfully preformed a surgery that reduced the pupils size normalizing my appearance. Most importantly the second surgery he did was on my only seeing eye. I had developed a dense cataract . I am a visual artist and for three months before he preformed cataract surgery on me I gave up painting . I had the surgery on Monday and today, Sunday , I was outside painting the landscape . I can see better than I have for many years. It is astounding ! I felt completely safe trusting my only good eye to Dr. Essepian. I think, an others agree, that he is the best Eye Surgeon in the Washington DC area.

The long wait in his office or outside his office is totally indefensible. In the past, I had to wait 30 minutes just to be taken back to give details to his assistant. During this time, he should not schedule so many appointments close together. But this was worse. I had to wait 18 minutes and was told another 30 minutes or more just to be called in by his assistant. Patients matter too. Not only $$.

The Chatract Surgery for both eyes Dr. Essepian did for me and for my wife, were both excellent and perfect surgeries. With perfect results with no pain or side effects whatsoever. His regular eye healthcare is just as excellent and perfect. I am so lucky to have him as my eye doctor.

EXCELLENT WORK AND DOCTOR. SOME REVIEWS FOUND HIM COLD , WHILE IT MAY BE TRUE, THE GUY TREATS HUNDREDS OF PATIENTS WEEKLY. HE CANNOT WALK AROUND WITH A FAKE SMILE ALL THE TIME. BUT ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW HIM, YOU REALIZE HE IS BEST ALL AROUND.

I first became a patient of Dr. Essepian about 4-5 years ago, when my vision became cloudy due to cataracts in both eyes. Dr. Essepian took a very conservative approach, fully answered my questions, and conducted two separate operations to insure that each would be successful. My vision has been restored to 20/20 and I do not even need reading glasses! I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Essepian, his thoroughness, conservative approach to treatment, and ready responses to my questions/concerns. John D. Pellegrin

He is a skilled surgeon but he runs his office poorly and treats his staff even worse. Unless you need a procedure that can only be performed by Dr. Essepian, you might as well get your cataract surgery done with another doctor because you will get the same results. In my opinion, Dr. Essepian is callous and unprofessional towards his patients and he is demeaning and inappropriate to his staff. Go to a doctor whose main concern is patient care and not the bottom line.

I was referred to Dr. Essepian by another excellent specialist, but I could not have chosen better myself. He is highly skilled, really cares for the health of the patients and has performed a wonderful cataract surgery job in my case that of an old woman with retina problems. I also find his bedside manners quite formidable for he answers all the relevant questions you may ask in details and in a comprehensible way. A really wonderful doctor.
