Dr. Jonathan B Rubenstein, MD

"Was diagnosed by Rubenstein with Fuchs Dystrophy. Said I needed emergent surgery in the next few days and while he treating the Fuchs Dystrophy, he might as well do cataract surgery on my eye, because everyone eventually needs it. I got three other opinions: Yale, UIC, and The Mayo Clinic. All three made same diagnosis HOWEVER three other doctors said to do nothing. “NEVER let anyone touch your eyes unless it is getting difficult to see” they advised. “ When I told Mayo (in Minnesota ) what my Chicago doctor recommended, Mayo doctor made my mouth drop wide open when he asked “Was that Rubenstein at Rush that recommended this new surgery!!!?!!. The Mayo doctor said Rubinstein is known nationwide for doing unnecessary surgeries and doing latest surgeries because of his ego and wanting to speak at ophthalmology conferences"

I was a patient of his many years ago. He and his staff were never able to determine what was causing a severe disruption in one eye. After struggling with over 5 medications for months, the symptoms finally stopped when I refused to use the medication any longer. Since my vision was no longer of use in that eye, Dr. Rubenstein performed a cornea transplant. After the surgery, I could see for the first time since the whole ordeal began. Then, at the follow up appointment, Dr. Rubenstein manually popped a stich in the eye and I have been unable to see out of that eye since. He offered to perform another procedure to fix his mistake, but I refused to let him cause any more damage. It has been 17 years since he destroyed my vision, and I have not been able to find a single doctor who is willing to try to repair the damage he did. They all say it is too risky. Had I not been so young when all this happened, I like to think I would have had more sense to avoid this man and seek out a… more skilled doctor.

I visited him at Rush Medical Center for Lasik eye surgery. No wait time and great service. I was extremely nervous and he was great. Very knowledgeable and surgery went well. Highly recommended.

saw him for cataract surgery. he put in TOTALLY wrong lens power (i couldnt read 1st line on eye chart and was firm in requesting a distance vision preference). he also tore my pupil, saying,' that shouldnt cause any issues'. well it did. so i had another corrective surgery to put in the proper lens. ended up with macular edema, which he ignored and did not do proper testing for, and then a retinal detachment, which he also missed (but was thankfully, caught, again, by another eye dr.) later, i had another detachment and am left with a lifetime of retina problems and a misery-inducing eye condition. he is way too overbooked, and cocky, to take ample time with patients, and is not at all caring about outcome. have no idea how people can rave about this jerk, but yay if he helped you. to others who have not yet seen him, i give you a HUGE warning.

so overly confident that he could fix my problem, then caused pre-surgical and surgical mistakes and was then rude and quick to dismiss symptoms after surgery, which turned out to be very serious complications and problems. i had heard good things about him but that was not my experience at all. even if things go well for you, except to spent 1/2 your day waiting to see him, with a mostly surly staff . he is always overbooked and that may be part of the problem. perhaps he cannot make enough time to properly care for his patients.

Dr Rubenstein was a great doctor for me but the wait time in his office is extremely long, at times up to and oevr two hours making a standard office visit a half day of PTO if not more.
