Dr. Kelly Joyce Cowen, MD

Dr. Cowen is professional, pleasant, and wise. She listens, she checks current results with previous, she asks excellent questions about possible symptoms. She is a star!

I came to Dr. Cowen on the recommendation of a specialist, after finding out my (former) GP had totally missed some atypical but very serious lab results. Turned out I have some rare diseases, which can be complicated to deal with. I was worried about finding a GP (as I think of her) given the number of doctors, meds, and sometimes weird issues that have to be dealt with - Some doctors really don't want to - but she has from the start been caring and thankfully also intelligent, reviews the information before I see her, and is great about discussing what's going on in a positive manner, coming up with and communicating a good plan, which may sometimes involve other docs, etc. A few years ago, I had a horrendous 10 weeks where suddenly I was short of breath, chest pain, etc. and then lost weight because I couldn't keep food down. It was kind of like walking around with a heart attack, and unfortunately ER docs etc. assumed it was a panic attack. Dr Cowen never lost faith (even when I… did sometimes), got me to various docs and tests, and at one point sent me back to a specialist, one of her colleagues, where the 2nd time around he figured out it was a terrible medication reaction. My symptoms reversed almost over night at a point where I had been seriously considering a DNR. And to date she and several colleagues in her practice (and a couple outside) continue to help me maintain pretty darn well. I think of her as my ring-master in the medical realm, one gifted also with grace and compassion and decency that is hard to find nowadays, inside or outside the medical office.

heard very good things about this doctor and wanted an appt. when i phoned i was told she was not acepting new patients and in fact recommended i take a new physcian starting on oct 1... frustrated with the info received online that was obviously inaccurate.

Active, careful listener. Has the ability to put all the pieces together and give her best recommendation as well as alternatives to consider. Extends herself to involve other doctors when she thinks appropriate. Never rushes me, is friendly and upbeat. Is very organized, reviews your information so you don't have to repeat yourself. One of the best docotors I have been to.

Doctor is friendly, a decent practitioner, but is not knowledgable about specialists. I was sent to specialists who were inadequate doctors or not the best for my problems. Busy office, hard to get appointment.

Needs to talk with patients about lab results instead of talking through an assistant.
