Dr. Purnima Thakran, MD

I had hesitated to go to Dr Thakran due to her patient reviews, but was able to get a same day appointment for a Nerve Density Test if I could drive down to the Apple Valley location. The practice is in an older building in the strip mall across from St Mary's, and is spartan. However, the staff took care of me reasonably well and when the doctor came in, she stopped to teach -- directly and on the spot -- one of her assistants who had not properly checked my blood pressure. She checked my reflexes and responses, and then did the nerve density test. It was no worse than mildly irritating except for the hands, which really hurt. I had no expectations of it being any less painful and really expected it to be worse. She was hesitant to provide me with immediate feedback but before I left she explained that she was changing a prescription I had for Meloxicam to what used to be considered a full dose. She also gave me a new prescription to take at night. She had her staff schedule me a… follow up in two weeks in Barstow, and told me the would contact a specialist who would meet me in Barstow to fit me with hand braces for carpal tunnel. She also had me get labs done for two pages of possible conditions -- 8 vials of blood. But, within a week, the numbness in my extremities was less and I am feeling somewhat better. This physician is very formal and organized in her approach. She was probably trained initially in the Indian Sub-Continent, and so her stiffness with patients and formal approach is really typical of the classical training and in fact with physicians in Indian mythology and history. So, she's professional, all-business, and is very direct. I prefer that to someone who wants to be my buddy. I think she may be a bad fit for someone who needs a lot of assurances, but if you are willing to put up with the pain caused by tests, you'll be more than satisfied with the outcomes. I'd recommend her to my friends and send my family to her with one warning; it's analytic and direct and cold. But, you'll get an accurate diagnosis and very effective treatment.

Waited 1 1/2 hours to see Dr. Once inside with Dr. She did not listen to complaints and was rude. Stated she was taking over all my medical needs as primary Dr. Started tests of which was very painful and held me down hard when moved from intense pain. Would not stop for a break or breath it out and kept on aggressively keep hurting me. After 1 leg I called it quits, and went to ER as I was in so much pain. Never called or went back. Filed suit for nerve damsge to leg. Recommend to not contact this office.

She was rude,and doesn't listen to what you have say,and give you a chance to ask any questions. She once told me that the bedroom is only used for two things,for sleeping,and the other thing! I was shocked! Just because I told her that I had everything that I needed in my room,such as a TV,and a computer, that's when she made the private statement.. She's to blunt in her comments, I've been a patient of her for over a year.. many doctors that I see know of her reputation..

Dr Thakran has a poor bedside manner. If you as the patient try to ask questions, she cuts you off and states well she said this or that. She stated to me that my previous 5 doctors didnt know what they were talking about and I do not have what I was diagnosed with almost 17 years ago. The office is poor at returning calls. I personally heard them while waiting in a room to be seen, they listened to the name of the patient on their answering machine and then deleted the phone messages. That probably accounts for why they never returned my calls. There is one front desk person there who is fantastic but she has to do everything herself since the office manager is good at messing things up as well. While I was waiting to be seen, still in the lobby, he made an appointment for a patient under the wrong patient's name. He lost my medical records then I had to ask multiple times to get a message to the doctor for a medication. I am in pain all the time and the doctor does not listen to me… and it has been all around a bad experience with this office. I am looking elsewhere to be seen.

i thought being an Indian she would be humble, soft spoken and caring. My husband is a patient of MS, needed a second opinion of an expert in the field. Reading the reviews I dared not make an appointment with her, and waste my time. ,!! Thanks for these reviews.

Rude, condescending, short attention span for patient's concerns. Has no time to explain, arrogant attitude. Lacks compassion, talks loudly to embarrass the patient. Needs to learn communication skills.

Dr. Thakran is direct and to the point and I like that in a doctor.

She is loud and rude, has cold steely expression . Has no empathy for patient's pain/suffering. Listening to the patient is not her virtue. She is full of her bookish knowledge and degrees but no real education . She appears an unhappy, angry and frustrated person in need of psychological help. One does not care if her diagnosis is correct, one needs an md with human ears & politeness .

Rude, no compassion for patient's need, appears narcissistic , proud about her education.
