Dr. Samuel Alexander Hughes, MD

Dr. Sam Hughes is a neurosurgeon with Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Or. He diagnosed a cyst in my spine that was causing sciatica. Dr. Hughes spent a great deal of time talking with me and my husband on two separate occasions (totalling 2 hours) to FULLY explain my anatomy, the types of procedures that might help me, and the sequellae to the different options. He was very careful to fully explain the risks and be sure that I understood him. He did not recommend, but asked me to choose. I chose a micro-laminotomy to remove the cyst. It took a little over a year for my back to fully heal (as warned), but it has healed, and my quality of life has been restored. I highly recommend Dr. Hughes for an unusually high degree of integrity, thoroughness in approach, and as a capable surgeon.
