Dr. Souhel Najjar, MD

I have been to many doctors over the past few years. Dr. Najjar came highly recommended and I was looking forward to finally seeing a doctor who, to quote the doctor who referrred me to Dr. Najjar, "won't give up until he figures out the root cause of your symptoms". However, the doctor I met, while he might be a great diagnostician, doesn't have the patience to even listen for more than five minutes. He comes to his conclusions without taking into account all the various issues. (He actually changed his mind once at a follow up appointment because the information he was missing, and hadn't bothered to hear the first time, was vital to the diagnosis.) He also doesn't take the time to answer any questions I might have. To make it even worse, his nurse practitioner doesn't return phone calls for days, or even weeks, and then she sounds disinterested and says to make an appointment and come in because she doesn't know and can't ask the doctor. In short: very disappointing and frustrating.

I waited almost 2 years for an appointment with Dr. Najjar for my very sick 14 year old daughter. The experience in just setting up an appointment was a real nightmare!! They required my daughters full medical record, and when supplied with over one thousand pages of records, they persistently demanded additional records that do not exist!?! It was then followed by an interview with the physician's assistant, who was extremely heartless, rude, and reluctant!! There was no urgency or compassion to get my daughter seen and/or under the doctor's care. My daughter's condition is severe and time is of the essence, but they did not seem to care. Finally, two years later they schedule an appointment for us. Two weeks prior to the appointment they call me almost every day to request a referral for the appointment. A referral was faxed to Dr. Najjar's office multiple times to no avail. My daughter is wheelchair bound, severely disabled, and it is a monumental task to get her out of the home and… travel an hour away to a doctors appointment. After paying for tolls, gas, and expensive Manhattan parking to get there, our appointment was canceled because we arrived 15 minutes late. We were late because we had to navigate the maze of a hospital that the doctor's office is located in. Hospital workers and security kept sending us off in the wrong direction!! We were 15 minutes late after waiting 2 years for an appointment!! Two weeks leading up to the appointment and 20 conversations with the office manager, they neglected to tell us that office policy for late appointments allows for a 15 minute grace period and the appointment will be canceled!?!?! This is the most disgusting practice I have ever had to deal with! There is no compassion and zero empathy!!! Horrifying!!!!

Arrogant, rude and aloof. He is not very good and has terrible bedside manner. Thankfully found much better neurologists at Mt. Sinai.

After years of being ignored by doctors and being shipped from one psychiatrist to the next for my neurological symptoms, Dr. Najjar was the ONLY doctor to take me seriously. The minute I met him I felt like I was meeting my medical God. He immediately ordered all of the tests I've been BEGGING doctors to order me (New York Presbyterian, Beth Israel, NYU, etc) and diagnosed me within weeks with Autoimmune Encephalitis. Not only is he BRILLIANT, he is one of the kindest doctors I've ever encountered in my life. Extremely humble.

Dr Najjar is the best!! I have been going to him for years and had surgery just over two years ago. Since then I have been seizure free. He told me it would "Give me a better quality of life" and he was right. I am so lucky and grateful to him and that he is my doctor!!

I was very anxious and desprate to see this dr after reading the article on girl with brain on fire disease. I learned with drs to never let ur guard down, dont beleive it till its real and keep open mind positive. Again i wanted to beleive after i read about his not wanting persons to fall into cracks maybe this was a real Dr. i said to myself not let ur guard down after i called and left messages to a recording female assistant. I sensed after i was not returned call that something was not right. after a week and several calls and myeven going to nyu, i got call back. ok i was told she made me an apointment for week. I again sensed something not right. I sat there on phone, and was in pain from my condtions and fighting to keep survival, and made it clear i was years ni neglect and holding off my fate. The woman sounded flighty. but i said keep open minded. ok i was going to say no. as i was about to fly out. I had to fight to hear a correct voice. i said ok and waited for the day… . That day i called as i had lost my phone day before. now it was like monday before holiday. I call as im about to walk down block to nyu. the woman in dramatics says oh im glad u called because u cant see that dr today. I wanted to strangle her, as i knew there was a game. i was in intollerable pain but putting up resistance, and fight i knew i did not have much time left to save my lfie and i already knew my own conditions the consquences of dr failure to treat and what was going on. She then said u can see dr so and so. I thought about it very upset she tortured me this way. i said ok. walking down ten blocks or more to east side to clinic. when i got there, she was like do u have ur insurance card . i said no. as she said she found my name in computer and my information should been there. i began to crack and get very upset and told her. as she got rude with me agressive. i said. Do u understand im here for a brain condition and it has become harder to process and think. i hung up phone and walked out. what took place after that left me to lose my battle , my life took a left turn into the worst not best case senario and a fight for my health that i lost, now im non functional and wish ihad that day back or month where at least i had fight and chance. what took place because i was not given small care and fast to prevent last end of this condtions is sad. i fell into cracks or was pushed by a list of people incompetance and drs. i still am trying to get to talk to him. this is all strange and evil.

Dr. Najjar was the ONLY neurologist to diagnose my problem..it took TEN years to find someone who wanted to look at the whole picture! He viewed all testing for the last 10 years, doctors notes, blood work etc. I have a rare disease and if it wasn't for him I would still be suffering!!!

Most caring and thorough doctor I have ever met. He spent 45 minutes with me my first visit, and at least twenty minutes to a half hour on subsequent visits. He sat me down to explain my MRI and CT scan in detail. Most of all he listened to me and we came up with a plan of care together. Would highly reccommend.
