Dr. Young W. Kwon, MD

I met Dr. Kwon in July of this year, after I fell and tore my rotator cuff. On all levels, I had a very positive experience with Dr. Kwon and NYU Langone Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Kwon was both attentive and patient during the consultation. Dr. Kwon could see that I was upset with the diagnosis but quickly put me at ease. Dr. Kwon clearly explained the type of injury (a complete tear) that was detected during his initial exam and the subsequent MRI. Dr. Kwon provided a detailed explanation of the surgery I would need to repair my shoulder and the physical therapy I would need. Dr. Kwon performed the surgery to repair my rotator cuff and biceps tendon. Leading up to the operation and the initial recovery, Dr. Kwon was attentive, friendly and promptly answered the steady stream of questions I had through NYU Langon app. Isabella, the PA for Dr. Kwon, was also excellent. Isabell helped me navigate a pain management strategy for several weeks after the operation. The result of my… surgery was a successful outcome. Dr. Kwon did an excellent job. I am back to swimming, biking and fishing 3 months after the operation. I am very grateful to Dr. Kwon, Isabella and all the staff at NYU Langone for helping me ger the care I needed and to recover from a difficult injury.

Dr. Kwon was very dismissive during the visit. He didn’t take the time to properly examine me and his communication style was condescending and rude. Do not recommend.

Office cancelled my appointment before I got to see him. They said he was the wrong doctor for me. That is a bunch of BS. My shoulder is bothering and he is a shoulder specialist. Staff member out of nowhere brings up sciatica and I should see a spine doctor. I told her the sciatic nerve has nothing to do with the shoulder. It fell on deaf ears. I am lodging a complaint with NYU.

I have been in the medical field for my entire career over 20 years. I have never experienced a doctor that has been on point with every step off this rotator cuff surgery that my husband has received. He has answered each and every question. Each text message that we sent was answered within an hour. He called three times the day of and after surgery to make sure that all was going well. Hats off to dr. Kwon and his staff.

This doctor only saw me for 2 minutes and was mostly seen by a very young rude assistant. He looked at my x rays and said I needed a total shoulder replacement which turned out not to be the case when I saw a doctor at a different hospital. Stay away from this doctor

Dr. Qwon's staff and assistants were kind, courteous and attentive to my needs throughout, and I am very pleased with the outcome, and grateful to Dr.Qwon for his thoughtfulness, courtesy and professionalism, and of course great skill and expertise in performing the procedure. Reattachment of my triceps tendon. Go to him with confidence for any shoulder and elbow related surgeries, he is absolutely the best! I highly recommend him.

Yes, this is long but I like to be as detailed as possible. Sadly, this isn't everything I could have written bad about him. I made this appointment after seeing a very knowledgeable Physical Therapist Physician that one of Kwong’s colleagues referred me to. She said she could not do anything for me at the time due to the pain I was in and the possibility of making things much worse. In an attempt to get a fair and accurate assessment- I kept my answers slightly vague when asked about the painful areas. She immediately began finding each and every problem area the the previous orthopedic surgeon was completely dismissive of and sent me to a neurologist that seemed to think I was wasting my time seeing her and should have gone back to the ortho as well. Being that all of these issues came up after a recent shoulder dislocation. The imaging shows a tear, bone spurring, 2 cysts amongst other things I do not fully understand. Mind you, I had no issues with any part of my arm until the… most recent shoulder dislocation(s) and suddenly had pain radiating out my shoulder and the surrounding area down to my fingers which have become numb. So now I have 2 other doctors sending me back to the ortho. This time I tried to get a shoulder specialist who could see me as soon as possible. Fast forward to a few days later... I had a feeling things were not going to go well almost from the moment I walked into the exam room Mr. Kwong's PA was being a bit condescending. NO doctor should ever be able to rub off on his staff like this making them think it's acceptable a treat patient like that. Anyway, I began to explain my reasoning for being there and as I'm talking he starts correcting me about what the imaging reports said and I guess he did not like the fact that I had to reiterate and ask him to ACTUALLY READ THE REPORT. He asked if I had images which he already had. At this point I'm certain that there was never a review of the images(not by the PA at least). He then asks me to remove my shirt to examine me and I asked if I needed to take off my t-shirt or if my jacket and hoodie were enough as it is hard to take my shirt off in the condition my shoulder/arm is in. He immediately became extremely rude and said "don't take it off, we don't have to examine you" and I just replied that it hurt quite a bit so he walks out to get Mr Kwong. In comes Mr. Kwong with the PA and the first words out of his mouth are, "how much did smoke in here?" I thought he was joking but I sure was wrong. I had smoked a cigarette before coming into the building but NEVER would I do such a thing. At this point the first thing he does is accuse me of smoking in the exam room! He then starts asking me about why I am there and I before I can tell him, he rudely says "What did you just want a 3rd opinion?" At this point, I'm in awe. I had never been treated like this for being concerned about my health. Not to mention I was told by the PT to go back to an ortho AFTER she called their office and told them she was sending me! I made the decision to see Kwong based on the fact that he is a shoulder and elbow specialist and that’s why he me mentioned a third opinion. So I then explain that I had seen 2 Dr's that I felt didn't want to listen to me and just wanted me in and out. The MRI is not the greatest because I could not sit still with the device attempting to keep my arm straight in the MRI machine due to EXTREME PAIN. I'm talking a 15 on a scale of 1-10. It took under 30 minutes for physician that works with the recovery and alternative to surgery patients to tell me what I didn't want to say after seeing 2 orthopedic Dr.’s not listening, she immediately finds my points of extreme pain and tells me she not only works with these types of things daily but she had it as well!. I also try to tell Kwong that "I am very in tune with my body after numerous surgeries and injuries in my life that not only will 55% of the NYC's population ever deal with but some so rare that 95% of the nation will never deal with. There has been not just one or 2 things Dr's have been wrong about with me- more like 10-15. Because of this, I research what's going on and start offering up some of what I've learned(I mean what could be better to a Dr than an educated patient?!?!). I explain that I know I am certainly no Dr but between what I've found as well as been told, these few things make sense to me. Instead of talking to me like all the other Dr's I've dealt with over the years, he gets up and says things like "IF there is a cyst there...”. Well, I have a laundry list of medical studies that say the opposite(I didn't tell him that fearing it would make things worse) as well as another physician telling me the same. His comments just become more and more rude and it's apparent HE did not even read the reports. He's texting people, and saying things like "well you seem to do good enough research maybe you can figure it out". At this point I said nothing rude nor did I give him a reason to think I thought he knew nothing but that's just how he acted. I then ask why I was asked to take my clothing off if I wasn't going to be examined as well as... "wow, just wow. you have been condescending and dismissive since the moment moment you walked in, how is it fair to treat a patient that just wants to go on with his life without having to take medication to feel like he's not dying from the pain these things" and he literally says, "I don't know what we did to upset you" and walks out of the room. At this point I really wish I had given him a piece of my mind and although I'm still holding back... I will say this. YOU'RE HEAD is ENTIRELY TOO INFLATED and all that does is make you look like an insecure, little man. I really wish I had looked you up and checked your reviews prior to seeing you because apparently I'm not the only one to have called you condes

Dr. Kwon is an excellent doctor. Explained what was the matter with my shoulder. Gave me the good and the bad. Operated and spoke to me before operation and checked up on me. Very friendly. Highly recommend him to anyone needing a shoulder replacement. The staff at NYU Langone is very professional, intelligent, and nice. Great hospital, great doctor.

I am an M.D. When doctors need surgery, we look for only the very best. When it comes to shoulder surgery, Dr. Kwon is the very best. He has a serious personality, but is a warm person, a family man, a careful, and very talented surgeon. Whenever iI discussed medical research with him regarding shoulders, i was pleasantly surprised that not only had he read the articles that I mentioned, but he also critiqued their methods and procedures of the studies. It is important to not let a general orthopedist or even a sports medicine orthopedist operate on your shoulder. Shoulders are too tricky. You need a fellowship trained, strictly shoulder surgeon. Dr Kwon is just that. He stays current with his literature, and techniques.
