Dr. April Mayer, MD

I took my son, 7, to her for depression and she did not tell us a possible issue with the medication she put him on can lead to constipation. My son got a bad earache and constipation and had to go to the hospital for dehydration. She was also treating me and I thought she was great at the time. Then asky horrifying thing happened and my husband could not leave work and I had her paged to call me because I was having a breakdown and she did not call back. She later told me her dog had had puppies.

Dr. Mayer cares about her patients. She goes above and beyond to help her patients. We need more doctors like her.

When visiting Dr. Mayer, I managed to go to three sessions before I had to abandon ship. I did not feel comfortable talking to her, I didn't feel listened to, and she said a lot of things that were pretty insensitive to the issues I was battling. On the last session, I left her office and prompt broke into angry tears at the fury I felt over how I was talked to. I would not recommend.

I finally decided to write a review for the sole reason of warning others against receiving her services as a mental health professional. As someone who is in the field, I can with confidence say that Dr. Mayer is a truly unprofessional, unstable woman who should not be under any circumstances be seeing patients of any kind. She was treating me for anxiety. She would refute most medical advice I received from my personal physicians, and at times full on yell and belittle me for specific anxieties I had. Why I stayed with her for over a year? I kept telling myself it was in my head, I was being ridiculous. After all, I did have a good amount of anxiety, perhaps I was being too sensitive. Every time I left her office, I felt more depressed. Initially, My husband and I received couples counseling from her, and we would both leave her office feeling defeated. The last straw for me was when she left me a horrible message ranting and yelling because of a paperwork misunderstanding. That was… it. I finally realized there was something wrong here. I've considered reporting her to the board, but haven't done so yet. As others have commented, she is very unstable. No professional, let alone in this specific field, should be yelling at you, or putting you down. Please stay away from this Psychiatrist.

She is caring and takes her time with you. She did not accurately diagnose me and prescribed ineffective medication (substantiated by another psychiatrist). She's off schedule a lot which could be due to the time she spends with her patients. She appears flaky and even scared me. I do not think I'd recommend her to anyone. Also, difficult to get a call back by phone.

My experience with Dr. Mayer has been great. I started seeing her about three months ago and she has literally put me back together. After a traumatic DV incident, she has helped me sort through my issues and feel normal and safe again. She has made an effort to find times to meet that work for both of us and makes me feel like a priority. I never feel that she brings her personal life into our sessions. She never makes me wait longer than 5 minutes and never ends sessions with me feeling upset or still emotional. Oh, and she's not one of those doctors that just sits there and goes "Uh huh ... and how did that make you feel?" I really feel that she is actively listening and cares about what i have to say. In short, Dr. Mayer is the only psychiatrist that has ever made me feel normal and happy and not crazy. I strongly recommend her.

She is flaky! She seems totally scatterbrained much of the time. She had me on four to five different meds at a time. Then, instead of only making one change, she would increase, decrease or add meds all at once making it impossible to see what drugs or combination thereof was causing the improvement/decompensation.In addition, she made inappropriate comments and had virtually no communication during a psychiatric hospitalization. Then, she seemed not to know what I was talking about when I pointed this out.Very weird, and was getting worse when I left.
