Dr. Deepa Gopalakrishnan, MD

Dr. Gopalakrishnan is an amazing psychiatrist. She is so compassionate and she really tries to look at things from a holistic viewpoint. I hate that I lost her when I left Kaiser, but I needed better coverage for my vision problems.

Being forced to change insurance from Kaiser meant that I could no longer see Dr. Gopalakrishnan (or Dr. G, as patients normally address her). That was devastating, since I have never met a psychiatrist like her. I doubt I ever will. She saw me from the age of around 12 to 19, when the change occurred. She was beyond empathetic and kind, very relaxing and gentle, and always a great listener. She was NOT the type to just throw antidepressants at you and see what stuck; she was the kind to talk through every potential medicine, its side effects, and your comfort level with being prescribed anything. She has incredible, unmatched bedside manner and really cares about you and your success as a person, not just as a patient. The only problems are (1) Kaiser's wait times, which are not her fault, and (2) the fact that she does not have her own private practice. In spite of being in a bit of a financial crunch, I would gladly pay out of pocket just to see her again.

I have been seeing Dr. G for around 7 years, and I have no hesitation whatsoever about switching doctors after a visit or two if I am unhappy with them. Compassionate, knowledgeable, caring. I am , however, very unhappy with Kaisers wait time for appointments, sometimes up to 6 to 7 weeks! Totally unacceptable, but not her fault. [M.W.]
