Dr. Heidi Prather is an Attending Physician and Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS)/Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Prather is the Founder and Medical Director of the HSS Lifestyle Medicine Program�a standardized, interprofessional program designed to help people with musculoskeletal pain improve whole-person health, reduce pain, and enhance function through behavior change. While at HSS, she has served as the Clinical Director for Value-Based Programming and Medical Director for the HSS Osteoarthritis Pilot Program. She earned her Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Biology and Chemistry from Drury University before completing her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Kansas City University. She then completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. From 1998 to 2020, Dr. Prather served at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where she was Professor, Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and the founding Division Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurology. Her leadership roles included Outpatient Medical Director of the Joint and Spine Center at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, co-founder of the Sports Medicine Fellowship in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and co-director of the NASS-recognized Spine and Intervention Fellowship. Dr. Prather was a founding member of the Young Adult Hip Study Group and led the Hip-Spine Study Group at Washington University. Dr Prather conducted the pilot program and then founded the Living Well Center, the first standardized musculoskeletal health program of its kind, utilizing the application of Lifestyle Medicine. Nationally, Dr. Prather is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and is a Diplomat of the Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She has served as an Oral Board Examiner, written board exam item writer, and self-assessment writer for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She is a founding Senior Editor for PM&R, the journal of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Notably, she was the first female president of both the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation and the North American Spine Society. Dr. Prather�s research focuses on pre-arthritic hip disorders, the hip-spine connection, gender differences in musculoskeletal disorders and athletic injuries, and the application of lifestyle medicine in musculoskeletal care. Her work has led to over 100 peer-reviewed publications, national and international presentations, and both intra- and extramural funding.
