Dr. Melvin C Chen, MD

I was diagnosed with 2 holes and a large tear and detachment in my retina. Called my regular optician and was sent immediately to Dr Chen. Was scheduled for emergency surgery the next day Super Bowl Sunday Feb 2016! He did a wonderful job repairing my retina Subsequently I had more tears in my other eye 3 yrs later. He has been doing a wonderful job helping restore my vision. I’m very grateful for his expertise and the great staff at Sarasota Retina Institute! I was one of the many emergencies that cause delays in seeing other patients. He is definitely worth waiting for! Thank you Dr Chen and staff!!!

Arrived at 1:30 for appointment schedule 6 months prior. Impressed to be taken quickly for eye test, dilation and retina photo... began waiting to see Dr Chen at 1:45. By 2:30, I went out to the waiting room to see if I had been forgotten in the examining room. An aide assured me that they had fallen a bit behind and I was the next patient. By 3:15- after waiting 1.5 hours I left. If they were behind, I understand... but to expect patients to simply wait, with no warning or updates is extremely disrespectful. Whether the fault lies with office management or the sheer greed of the doctors for overbooking, I would not trust scheduling a return visit. Look around, there are very good doctors available who know how to treat patients with respect.

2nd surgery required. Secretaries at front desk efficient and friendly. Medical assistants, nurses and 2 doctors not so friendly. Poor bedside manner, did not articulate and explain things well, waited over an hour on 3 different visits. One doctor actually accused me of lying about when my symptoms occurred! Did not inspire confidence or caring. Had it not been for the emergency nature of my case, I would never have had procedure done here. Still don't know if it is a success.
