Dr. Paula A Mckenzie, MD

I've been a patient with Dr. McKenzie for 15+ years. She gave me exception care through one pregnancy and expertly placed the Essure device with ease... I didn't even know she was done. Throughout my years with Dr. McKenzie, she has always been nothing but kind and patient... lord knows I sometime require a lot of patience... I ask a lot of question :) Anyway, I've never experienced any of the negativity I've read online. She is one of the most competent OB/GYN's I've had the pleasure of knowing. Now her support staff is another question. I've seen them come and go. Quite frankly, they are reason for most of her bad reviews. It's unfortunate that she has not been blessed with good people. As a business owner, I truly know that finding people to work for you that are there for more then just the paycheck is very difficult. Dr. McKenzie, I think your AWESOME!!!!

Even though this review notes a 1 star, it is NOT because of Dr. McKenzie's medical practice. It is due to the incompetent staff at Alexandria Womencare. Dr. McKenzie is a kind, caring, and very knowledgeable OBGYN. I am comfortable with her and I have NOTHING negative to say about her. I am utterly frustrated and disgusted with her office staff. I have been a patient here for many years and the only reason I have not switched is because of Dr. McKenzie. Unfortunately, I have come to the end of the road with this office staff. I received wrong information via voice mail and when I called to see what it was pertaining to (freaked out and worried; btw), the nurse did not know what I was talking about. Long story short, after waiting on hold for over an hour with misinformation flowing, I was aghast! This staff has no respect for your time or exemplifies any urgency to address your concerns in a timely manner. I was just told to call back the next day as if that was going to help… resolve the problem. They were rather nonchalant about the ordeal while I was concerned that something was wrong with my health. I decided to visit the office the next day so I could get some answers. After all, historically the voice mails I have left for the nurses have ALWAYS gone unanswered/returned. I have ALWAYS had to keep calling and sometimes I was told the nurse never received my message. I spoke with the young lady at the front desk who could not locate my MEDICAL RECORDS and she could not tell me who called me and left a message. The nurse could not tell me who left the message telling me to call and speak with her! She had no knowledge so that was unfair to her. Either way, still no answer, no chart, I don't know if something is wrong or if I need further testing. I am at this point, stressed out, wondering what is going on with my body and still, nothing. Later in the day I was informed that my records were found and I received the information I needed to know, which thankfully, was not bad news after all. This however, does not excuse the way this matter was handled and "I'm so sorry doesn't cut it". I have heard this far too often over the past years and I have come to the conclusion that I just don't need the stress. It doesn't matter who called, everyone is a representative of this private practice and equally accountable for misplacing personal identifiable information (PII).

My appointment (Yearly) was to be with Dr. Mckenzie. When I got there, it was with Dr. Khan. I wish the staff would of notified me. The doctor then ordered tests I normally dont need. Then they where ordred wrong so the diagnostic center would not take me. Then I called the office and they said they would call me back. They never did. I am hand carr;ying this order today to the office and we will see what will happen. It is so....... frustrating. I had another incident last year, that the staff never got back to me.

I've been trying to get my medical records from her office now for months. I've even sent them a letter and waited over 2.5 weeks. they now say they never received the letter and I have to start from square one. this is a horrible office and managed poorly. I don't know if i'll ever get my records from them, but I do know i'll never go back there to see the doctor. every time I've had an appointment with her I told her she needs to work on getting new staff. her staff is terrible, they never follow up and rarely answer or return phone calls. I've nothing good to say about her office/operations.

I had a 7:30 a.m. appt. today with Dr. McKenzie. I arrived 7:20 a.m. The office door was locked. In the meantime 2 other patients showed up and had to wait in their cars. Not even a receptionist or nurse showed up. I waited until 8:05 a.m. and had to go to work. When I got to work, I called the office and someone answered. I started to explain I had 7:30 appt. and right away the receptionist put me on hold and NEVER came back and picked up phone!!! This is the most unprofessional office I've ever been to. This is the 2nd time something like this has happened. The first time the doctor was delivering a baby at hospital which is fine. But the receptionist left me sitting in waiting room for 45 mins. until I approached her and asked how much longer it would take to be seen. That's when she told me the doctor was at hospital. Dr. McKenzie is a good doctor but what I have to go through to see her is unacceptable. She needs new office staff.

We were made to pay money on each visit that we were not supposed to pay.

I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. Sadly, my main reason is her office staff. When asked a question, they are rude. You can sense their attitude while they do they're "job". I was not impressed with the facility either. The doctor listened to my questions and answered them to the best of her ability. However, my primary reason for not going with this doctor was the staff and other reviews I had read regarding this doctor. The staff failed to give me all information needed to make my visit as easy as possible. Every single time I had to deal with her staff, it was the worst experience and customer service I have ever received.

Dr. McKenzie's office staff has very poor manners. The front desk is unprofessional and not caring at all. I was her patient for 2 years until she took 8 weeks to call me back for a follow up after my routine exam and pap smear. I was told that they found HPV and I needed colposcopy done. OK, she did it in the office the same day. A week later I get another call inviting me back in the same day. I was really worried, the receptionist did not care at all. I came in and was told "it's pretty serious" by the doctor. I was recommended outpatient surgery to remove granular cells from my cervix. The offices staff told me the wrong time that I needed to report to the hospital by, therefore I was late to be admitted. When the doctor came, she said "Oh, I thought that was enough time". Before the surgery she told me to follow up with her after 2 weeks if I don't hear from her. She never came back to see me afterwards. 2 weeks passed, no call back. I called back and had a very hard time getting… through to her. Her staff said that she would call if there was anything wrong. Needless to say, it took her 3 weeks to finally call back. She didn't recommend anything and said to see her in 3 months. I was very concerned and sought out a second opinion from GYN oncologist. I was shocked when he diagnosed me with cervical cancer. And even more shocked when I found out that the pathology report listed cancer cells even BEFORE she did the outpatient surgery, which she didn't even bother to mention (she kept calling it granular cells). I am sending a complaint to Virginia Medical Board. DR. MCKENZIE DOES NOT CARE. PLEASE FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR FOR YOURSELF!!!

I love Dr. McKenzie. She is very caring and understanding. The office wait can be long because she is often pulled away to deliver babies.I have been a patient of hers for 20 years. I deal with the poor organization of the office because she is incredible. In fact, my 2nd baby was an emergency delivery. Rather than a random on call doctor delivering my girl, Dr. McKenzie came to the hospital (around the corner from her office) in the middle of a Thursday morning. I am sure she had some angry patients, but my baby that was at a high risk of death at birth was born without complications. I keep that in mind while I sit and wait in her office.

I was not seen by Dr. McKenzie, another Dr. filled in for her.I would have to say the practice as a whole was ok.I was stunned to find out that I was only prescribed 3 months of birth control at a time! I've been on oral contraceptive for over 15 yrs. and have had several different GYNs due to job changes and moves. I have ALWAYS been given a year's supply of birth control, unless I was having problems w/ it. The only logical explanation for Dr. McKenzie's deviation is b/c she wants to keep charging patients for a visit.I do not have time for this, especially given how difficult it was to get an appt. w/ this doctor in the first place.
